Hello Readers!
As promised, here is Tuesday's update. I hope you all enjoy it. We are back with Kay.

The monsoon season was mostly filled with illness and random injuries that didn’t require much work between the two shamans, so Kay often found herself going to the village to deliver what was needed. Moreso when Mitis got closer to her due date.
The village was highly protective of the girl, knowing that this was the first child born to their current king. The child would remain in the village, making it the king’s land, until such time as the child was killed.
Kay didn’t understand the culture where a King could sow his seed as he wished and then watch his children destroy each other, for only one to continue his line. She had asked Silens about it before, but she had shrugged and shown her the marks all over her body from her journey through her various brothers to claim the throne for herself.
Kay wouldn’t let it happen. Not after Mitis had put the amount of effort into trying to forge a friendship with her. She would never allow the son within Mitis to be killed, even if she had to teach him to fight the way she did to kill his other siblings, as she would be put to death if she were caught killing the other children.
Sighing, Kay entered the village, just as the rain was starting to let up. She grumbled and made her way to where Mitis was staying with her parents. They were nice enough, but the mother had been very clingy since being introduced to the woman who saved her eldest son. Mitis had to warn her that Kay didn’t like to be touched. The woman hadn’t listened, and when her embrace had been met with stiffened Kay, she hadn’t done it again. Instead, she continued to send choice cuts of meat and the planet’s equivalent of honey back home with her.
Kay never took the meat, but the honey she did, as Silens often used it to treat sore throats and to cover wounds to lower the chances of infection. The hosts had never seemed irritated with the exchange, but rather impressed that she wouldn’t take the higher quality item.
Today, Kay was visiting to deliver some medicine for the old woman’s arthritis and to check the baby’s position. Mitis had insisted on having a home birth, as was her right, but the baby had stubbornly decided to remain high and not descend as he should have.
Silens was worried that the child was too big and the danger that it could pose to Mitis, which is why she had sent Kay. Mitis always did what she could to make Kay happy, and if that meant sending the Fell Dragon to twist the girl’s arm to come in to be induced, Silens was going to do that.
Kay sighed heavily and knocked on the door, then stepped back as the doors swung outward. The door swung open to reveal the father, whom Kay hadn’t had much interaction with before. He grunted a welcome and let Kay enter the home, taking her raincoat as she stepped in.
She gave him the medicine for his wife and then travelled deeper into the home to find Mitis. She was almost surprised to see Mitis pacing in her room with a hand on her lower back. Noticing her, Mitis half-smiled and said, “He is bouncing.”
Kay knew better. She had seen this often enough. She shook her head slowly, and Mitis lost her smile.
“You think it is time?”
Kay nodded her head.
“Then my father will need to get the shaman.”
Kay was about to nod her head when there was a crash of thunder, shaking the house.
Fuck.
Kay knew that it wasn’t safe to walk in what was being heralded, and there was no way that she was going to have Silens out in this weather. She still had a cough from the last patient who had come for a cold treatment.
She needed to communicate what she required for a birth that seemed to have started some time ago. She didn’t have many signs, and none that would work in this case. She gritted her teeth and looked to the door. Was this her chance to finally speak after being on the planet for months?
Mitis seemed to pick up on the slight panic that Kay was exhibiting. During her visits, she had caught Silens and Kay talk in lower murmuring voices, in a language she didn’t know, so she knew Kay could speak. She had just never spoken to anyone in the village.
Mitis stepped closer, so close that Kay wanted to step back. Mitis gripped her shoulders and looked her in the eye.
“I know you can speak, but I am not sure why you won’t in front of me. I’ll say a list of items we may need, and you nod your head for anything we need and shake it for what we don’t need. Will that help? I think I remember everything, but I may need some help.”
Kay almost felt relief, but she knew they were in for a long day depending on the baby’s position and Mitis’s progression. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to remain silent. She let a low growl out, but nodded her head all the same.
Mitis dragged her to where her parents were and explained the situation. The mother grinned broadly, but the father seemed to want to flee. It was fairly uncommon for menfolk to remain close during birth, but the rain would prevent him from travelling too far.
“Dad, you’re in charge of keeping the water hot. Collect what you can from the rain. Mom, towels, lots. There should be some herbs in the pottery painted yellow. Yes, that’s for pain and to help muscles relax.”
“She’s an apprentice.” Said her father slowly.
“As am I, between the two of us, we should be able to make one decent shaman. Please, Dad, I know you’re unhappy that the king chose me, but it was my choice to say yes. Don’t let the child suffer for something I decided to do.”
The man grunted but said nothing further.
