Mid-1970s. The communists were about to commit one of their many urbanist crimes by building a large complex of student dormitories in the middle of nowhere – or rather, between a forest and fields on Prague’s outskirts. Perhaps this was intended to isolate students from the general population, as it’s always the students who initiate protests against oppression (it was the students who actually started the Velvet Revolution some fifteen years later). Perhaps it was meant to allow for tighter monitoring in such a secluded nook, at least by Prague standards. Either way, the first Brutalist-style massive concrete block was opened in 1979 and named after one of the Czech rivers. All of them bear river names—four Czech and one Russian, a nod to the “best friend forever” of that time, the Soviet Union.
Je půlka sedmdesátých let, a komunisté se chystají spáchat další urbanistický zločin. Postavit studentské koleje, klasické východoevropské paneláky, kdesi na kraji Prahy. Mezi lesem a polem. Asi se jim líbila idea, že izolují studenty od zbytku populace. Jsou to přeci jen obvykle studenti, kdo se bouří proti totalitním režimům. Ostatně, i sametovou revoluci začali studenti. Nebo možná bylo snazší studenty kontrolovat, když byli takhle pohromadě. Ať tak a nebo tak, od osmdesátých let tu studenti opravdu bydlí. V panelácích, které se jmenují po českých řekách, a taky po jedné ruské.
The dormitories have been reconstructed several times since then, and as the city has grown, they are now less isolated; yet, as my photos show, they still feel like they lie at the very edge of Prague. The blocks now host five thousand students who commute by bus to the nearest metro station and then transfer to another line to reach their university campuses. Sounds efficient, right?
Od těch osmdesátých let proběhlo několik rekonstrukcí. I tady už hrají paneláky barvami. I město se rozrostlo, takže už nejsou tak odříznuté od světa. Myslím, že se i zmenšila kapacita, takže dneska tu bydlí jen nějakých pět tisíc studentů. Tuším, že na české poměry by to vydalo na jedno menší město. Většina z nich musí dojíždět autobusem na metro, a pak ještě přestupovat. Na to, že Praha není až tak velká, je dojíždění z Kolejí Jižní Město, jak se areál jmenuje, docela opruz.
The dorms naturally have their own clubs and bars, which are known for wild parties that last until early—or even late—morning. And since 2018, there’s a great place to dine or enjoy fine craft beer. Spojovna microbrewery. The name is a pun, meaning “Joint” in English, as the building lies at the point where three Prague districts meet - Chodov, Kunratice and Šeberov, as you can read on the picture below. "Beer-lovers of all districts, unite", reads the title.
Koleje samozřejmě mají svou hospodu a klub. Otevřené do časných, a někdy i pozdních ranních hodin. A od roku 2018 je tu i skvělý podnik, kde se můžete slušně najíst a napít. Pivovar Spojovna. A proč Spojovna? Protože stojí na hranici tří čtvrtí, jejichž obyvatele chce spojit. Jak moc se jim to daří, říct nedovedu, nicméně když sem jednou za uherský rok zavítám, velká část stolů je rezervovaná.
Spojovna is a brand-new venue with no long brewing tradition—a rarity in the Czech Republic, where many breweries operate in historical venues that were granted brewing rights centuries ago. The modern design doesn’t really fit the surroundings, which include a sports center, Brutalist-style panel buildings, and fields. It does, however, offer a fireplace for chilly winters and a summer garden with a smokehouse, a perfect law, and a playground—as we Czechs love to take kids to breweries. And as always, it is likely the best place around to dine.
Na rozdíl od mnoha českých minipivovarů nemá Spojovna žádnou mnohasetletou tradici. Tady bývala pole, a tak se tu pivo nikdy nevařilo. Moderní designová budova je tak trochu pěst na oko - vedle jsou už zmíněné koleje, sportovní centrum, a zpovzdálí vykukují okrajové paneláky Jižního Města. Spojovna má naopak perfektní anglický trávník, dětské hřiště, stánek s udírnou, a na dlouhé zimní večery i krb.
Beer
Hrdinný Kyjevák 12°, Dark Bohemian Lager
Not every Dark Bohemian lager must lean on sweetness, and this one proves it. Its aroma is dominated by dark-roasted chocolate, which also takes center stage in the body along with roasted malt and nuts. It has pronounced bitterness, with hints of Saaz hops emerging. A faint malt scent appears in the aftertaste. A great beer!
Ne každý tmavý ležák musí být sladký, a tenhle kousek je toho důkazem. Ve vůni převládá hořká čokoláda, která se spolu s praženým sladem objevuje i v těle. To je ale jinak spíše hořké, objevují se v něm tóny žateckého chmele. Trocha té sladovosti je v závěru, ale spíš symbolicky. Skvělé pivo!
Kunratický ležák 12°, Bohemian Lager
Modern brewery, modern lager. The brewmaster of Spojovna is no Scrooge when it comes to hopping. Typical herbal and almost peppery notes of Bohemian hops dominate both the aroma and taste. The hop intensity is such that it almost feels like one could bite into it. This, however, is more a beer meant to be savored slowly rather than a straightforward thirst quencher. An interesting brew indeed.
Moderní pivovar, moderní ležák. Sládkovi asi ujela ruka s chmelem, rozhodně nebudete mít pocit, že by na vás šetřil. Kořeněné, až peprné tóny dominují ve vůni i chuti. Skoro mi přišlo, že by se to pivo dalo kousat, jak je chmelené. Vnímám ho spíš jako takový speciál, který budete upíjet, než jako dvanáctku na žízeň.
Roztylský R.I.P.A.K 14°, IPA
Perhaps the most unorthodox IPA I have experienced recently. A notable infusion of pineapple mixed with tangerine combines with a characteristic bitterness, creating a surprisingly balanced body. The beer's alcohol content, slightly over 6%, is hard to guess solely from its flavor. The unusual character likely comes from the Waimea hop variety, which I haven't encountered much yet.
Asi nejzajímavější IPA, kterou jsem poslední dobou pil. Hodně ananasu, trochu mandarinek, a příjemně vyvážená hořkost. Člověk by až neřekl, že to pivo má lehce přes 6 % alkoholu. Nezvyklou chuť má asi na svědomí chmel Waimea, který ještě nemám moc napitý.
