May Garden Journal Update - Emptying Greenhouse & Planting Gardens - by Sunscape

Yes, it's time to empty the greenhouse and plant all the vegetables and the annuals into the gardens. The weather here in zone 6b, western, New York has warmed up enough to safely plant them out.
The average temperature in the greenhouse during the day reaches over 85°F during the day. The plants don't like being that warm and it stresses them out too much, besides they get too big too fast. Let's plant!

Peppers

Yellow Bell Peppers and Cayenne Long thin were the tallest ones to go in first.
The next planted were the Lemon Spice, Orange Spice, and Green Jalapeno's.
I didn't take photos of the Yellow Monster, Red Marconi, Sweet Banana, or the Jimmy Nardello peppers. All in all, 50 hot and sweet pepper plants are happily in the ground.

Tomatoes

I prepared the planting holes by amending the holes with ash, worm castings, blood meal, and Azomite. Mika was supervising the entire process.
I decided to do an experiment with the San Marzano tomatoes. I put sardines into half of the holes and left the others without. I want to see if the sardines make any difference on the size of the plants.
All the paste tomatoes are planted with a few Marigolds too.

Cabbage

The largest raised bed was planted in early April, and the plants have grown so much. The white netting keeps the cabbage moths off the plants.
These are Chinese Cabbage which has tripled in size, and the Spinach plant that came back from last year. I harvested it and had it for dinner this week.

Containers

I had two Italian Patio Tomato plants that I grew, they are supposed to produce a lot of small cherry tomatoes. We shall see how they do as I have never grown a tomato plant in a container before.
The lettuce has been producing very well and this week we will start having some for lunch and dinner.
I planted a second round of the Rossa lettuce and have them all in hanging baskets and a few around the containers as well.

Hydroponics

The lettuce in the hydroponics is not as happy as the ones outside in the baskets. The greenhouse is too warm for lettuce right now. I may have to move the float outside in a shady spot to finish them off.

Asian Spinach

This will be the third float of spinach that will be harvested this week for dinner.
This is what the roots look like when they are grown in water. I also have a lot growing outside in a tower garden too.

Onions

The Spanish onions are putting out new leaves and standing up nice and tall even with all the heavy rain. I can see that the bulbs are increasing in size. It looks like I will have a decent harvest in a few months.
This bumblebee was on one of the tomato plants when I planted it. I never saw it until I was covering the roots with soil. It had to have been in the greenhouse staying dry.
I think I will end this update for the first week of #May at this point. I will do a post for all the flowers and the gardens later this week. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your gardening.
