A new cop show set in Edinburgh? Count me in. Grizzled veteran with psychological issues and general disdain for humanity? So far so generic.Dept Q plays out over nine episodes, which in my opinion is one more than necessary for the tale told. The story plays with flashbacks which are intercut in a way which, initially, are not clearly defined. This makes for a disjointed viewing experience. The main action takes place in the present and has Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) installed as the head of a new cold case unit, the Department Q of the title.

I mentioned, in my last post, that a TW Steel MS45 was a watch on my hit list, well: Isn't it a beauty? The face is 45 millimetres, and the crown adds another 5. It's not the biggest watch out there, but it's sizeable.The case is anodised black steel and the strap is good sturdy leather with studs and stitching for added strength. It is a substantial time piece on the wrist.

My first exposure to Rebecca Kuang's ouevre was the BBC Radio adaption of her 2023 novel Yellowface. The language was lovely even though the subject - an unsuccesful European-American author taking the manuscript of a successful Chinese-American after being witness to her death - was discomfiting. She passes it of as her own work, to great acclaim.

Back in 2022 I wrote a blog post about why I thought LIV golf would prove detrimental to the chances of those who joined winning a Major (you can read it hereMy basic argument was that LIV players would lose the conditioning required to win a four round competition and that a LIV player was unlikely to win a Major unless it occured in the first couple of years after they join the tour. Koepka and DeChambeau's victories in the 2023 PGA and 2024 US open confirmed LIV players could win a Major. I think that the less favorable part of my prediction is beginning to be borne out and can be demonstrated by the final round of the 2025 PGA which, despite a so-so final round (his worst of the tournament), Scottie Scheffler secured with a five shot victory.
