Welcome back. For a change, today I continue my Great Outdoor series that I began last winter. I am an avid cross country skier, and this winter has featured consistently good ski conditions here in Central NY State.Today I enjoyed snowmobile trails near Bowman Lake State Park. There are a lot of trails in the area and they work well since they are groomed and packed by snowmobiles which allows for great skiing.

Today I will introduce you to a newly discovered heirloom seed source:But first, about a week ago I wrote a post on Winter Sowing.For those of you unfamiliar with this technique, it involves planting cold hardy seeds (including lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, even cold hard flowers) in containers and placing them outside in the cold and snow. My previous post has information regarding more veggies and flowers for which this technique will work.

Welcome back. The 2020 GBBC is in the books. It's always amazing to look at the count results on the website. The numbers are updated in real time. As I write this, over 232,000 checklists have been submitted worldwide, and roughly 6700 species have been observed.

Winter sowing is a technique I have been using for several years. It sounds unbelievable but it really does work. You can plant cold hardy seeds now in containers, place them outside, and they will germinate when the weather warms.

Welcome back, it's been about a month since my last post. I continue to participate in Project FeederWatch which runs until early April. This Friday marks the start of another citizen science project that takes place annually for 4 days in February.
