But the reality is that this film was inspired by the book Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp. Of course, it is logical that the film version had its differences; for example, in the name of the protagonist and the person who had to be saved. The truth is that I enjoyed reading this literary gem, and while it is true that the film had plenty of action, the story in the book has a darker, more intriguing plot with more trauma for the protagonist; there is also action.

Author Roderick Thorp is a master when it comes to psychological thrillers and crime stories that focus on reality. Reading his books is truly like watching a movie, and his themes create a highly dramatic, suffocating, and analytical atmosphere about the human condition. His characters are seen as real people with past traumas, without forgetting that touch of action that is essential to generating tension throughout the plot. I was able to enjoy this whole experience in his book, where we see the protagonist Joseph Leland, who, unlike the popular John McClane, is not an invincible person, nor is he that young man who can do everything. This guy, as I said before, has traumas, and these are exacerbated during the plot, to the point that in the end he receives such a strong emotional blow that it leaves him scarred forever. So he goes to the building where he works to wait for the Christmas party to end and thus fulfill his mission. The atmosphere certainly feels sad and filled with an uncomfortable melancholy.

As things in Joseph's life are not going well, a new tragedy is now looming. The situation is that the building has been taken over by terrorists, so the protagonist must take action; here begins a brutal game of survival, whose sole mission is to try to kill the terrorists and thus save his daughter, who, incidentally, is not alone, but also has his grandchildren with her; in addition, there are many more hostages. Christmas, which should be all about love and family, has turned into darkness, fear, pain, and death. The protagonist must not only fight the terrorists led by Anton Gruber, but also himself, due to all the negative emotional baggage that has marked him throughout his life.

The battlefield is a jungle of steel; a skyscraper filled with concrete, steel, and glass; it is the Klaxon Tower. Joseph is alone inside the building, relying only on the help of Officer Al Powell. Now, we might all think that the terrorists are motivated by money, but the truth is that within the corporation, illegal activities have taken place, there is corruption and mismanagement that has caused international damage; Joseph's daughter, Stephanie Genaro, may be aware of this, which is why the author includes this touch of social criticism in the work for everything that is happening.

Claro está y es lógico que la versión cinematográfica tuvo sus diferencias; por ejemplo, en el nombre del protagonista y la persona a quien se debía salvar. Lo cierto es que he disfrutado de la lectura de esta joya literaria y si bien es cierto, que en la película hubo acción a granel; en la historia planteada en el libro, su trama es más oscura, más intrigante y con más traumas recibidos por el protagonista; también hay acción.

El autor Roderick Thorp es un mago en lo que respecta al thriller psicológico y a las acciones criminales que se enfocan en lo real. De verdad que leerlo es como ver una película y sus temas crean un ambiente super dramático, asfixiante y muy analítico sobre la condición humana. Sus personajes son vistos como personas reales, tienen traumas pasados, sin olvidar ese toque de acción que es básico para generar tensión en toda la trama. Toda esta experiencia la pude disfrutar en su libro, donde vemos al protagonista Joseph Leland, que a diferencia del popular John McClane no es una persona invencible, ni tampoco ese joven que lo puede hacer todo. Este tipo; como dije antes, tiene traumas y los mismos se agudizan durante la trama, hasta el punto de que al final recibe un golpe emocional tan fuerte que lo deja marcado para siempre; no siempre hay finales felices, por ello lo oscuro y lo crudo con que Thorp ha escrito éste y vario de sus libros.

Si pretendes comparar la narrativa del libro, con las explosiones, disparos a granel y protagonistas casi invencibles, olvídate de ello; porque cuando nos adentramos en la lectura, rápidamente nos damos cuenta que estamos en presencia de algo más oscuro, con una narrativa tensa y asfixiante que nos genera mucha ansiedad y el no saber lo que va a pasar, hace del libro algo increíblemente atractivo. En un principio vemos a nuestro protagonista Joseph Leland; un detective jubilado, algo mayor y con traumas familiares que han roto toda su vida. Estamos en época navideña y él solo desea encontrarse con su hija para tratar de salvar esa relación. Por ello va el edificio donde labora para esperar que culmine su fiesta de navidad y así cumplir su cometido; ciertamente la atmósfera se siente triste y llena de una melancolía incómoda.

Como las cosas en la vida de Joseph no andan bien, ahora se le avecina una nueva tragedia. La situación es que el edificio ha sido tomado por unos terroristas, por lo que el protagonista debe tomar cartas en el asunto; aquí se inicia un juego crudo de supervivencia, cuya única misión es tratar de acabar con los terroristas y así poder salvar a su hija, que por cierto no está sola, también tiene consigo a sus nietos; además hay muchos más rehenes. La navidad que debe ser puro amor y familia; en esta oportunidad se convierte en oscuridad, miedo, dolor y muerte. El protagonista no solo debe luchar contra los terroristas liderados por Anton Gruber; sino contra él mismo, por toda esa carga emocional negativa que lo ha marcado durante toda su vida.

El campo de batalla es una jungla de acero; un rascacielos lleno de concreto, acero y vidrio; es la Torre Klaxon. Joseph está solo dentro del edificio, contando sólo con la ayuda del oficial Al Powell. Ahora, todos pudiéramos pensar que los terroristas están bajo motivaciones monetarias; pero lo cierto es que, dentro de la corporación han sucedido cosas que están fuera de la ley, existe corrupción y malos manejos que han causado daños internacionales; la hija de Joseph, Stephanie Genaro pudiera estar al tanto de ello, por lo que autor crea dentro de la obra ese toque de denuncia social por todo lo que sucede.

Repetimos, aquí no se trata de salvar a la esposa; se trata de salvar a su hija y nieto, lo que le imprime más emociones y traumas a la historia. La acciones que emprende Joseph son geniales; al leer se puede sentir como se mueve por todos lados, se mete por conductos y empieza a eliminar uno a uno a los enemigos. La violencia se siente de manera cinematográfica y cuando alguien muere, no hay cabida para risas ni chistes. Lo más interesante es que este libro data de los años 70 y en esa época no existía mucha modernidad con las armas; sin embargo, se nota como el autor nos detalla de una manera analítica como funcionan las armas, todo lo que tiene que ver con los explosivos y la manera como pueden comunicarse el protagonista y los terroristas.

Por otra parte y esto me recuerda al justiciero; es la forma como el autor hace que el protagonista deba usar toda su inteligencia para convertir elementos básicos en armas mortales. De verdad que la trama es muy buena, es rápida y no da cabida a espacios para el aburrimiento, es como si estuvieras viendo una película y lo que me llama la atención, es que el autor se caracteriza por no traer finales felices; esto refleja la crudeza del escritor por dar realismo a cada una de sus historias. De igual manera; aquí te ofrezco algunas interrogantes que al leer el libro las podrás develar ¿El protagonista ha podido eliminar por completo a los terroristas?; ¿Se ha podido reconciliar Joseph con su hija; o no hubo tiempo para ello?; sin lugar a dudas debes leer este libro y te darás cuenta que es mil veces mejor que ver Duro de Matar, porque nada dura para siempre; saludos y nos vemos pronto.
