The love for pitayas
You could remember me sharing the first pitaya I ever ate back in Budapest, which was eaten just as is, not even in a smoothie. It was a very tiny one and way too expensive as well, but I never forgot how good it was. I kept thinking about them after moving to Spain but always tuned in out of season to order them online as they were nowhere to be found in our supermarkets, sadly.
And then last year, I was finally tuning in during the season and ordered one box which gave me 16 pitayas if I recall correctly. I quickly learned that they were best in a smoothie, all of us loved it so much that we couldn't get enough of it. As I wasn't sure how long the pitayas would last in the fridge, I started to cut them in cubes and place them in freezer bags for later pitaya smoothie cravings.
The final box of the season
Just in time I decided that I didn't have enough of this and wanted pitaya season to last a little longer so I quickly ordered another box and it turned out this was the final box of the season, what a shame! But grateful I had another batch. I processed these a bit quicker because I didn't want any of them going to waste. They have a little discount for ordering two boxes at once so that's what I'll do this year as soon as they are available.
Cravings for pitayas
Lately I've said many times that I wish I had a pitaya to make a smoothie, as I miss it so much. There hasn't been any smoothie that I enjoy as much as the pitaya and banana smoothie since, super simple but it doesn't need any extras because it's so good as is.
I admit that I haven't been to the weekly market in the town nearby simply because it's full in the sun, and even in March or April, it's not a pleasant experience and I come back burned every single time. But as I feel much better since a week or so, and have loads of energy, I think I may try it this week or one of the next weeks now that the temperatures are still not in the 30 degrees Celcius.
Markethall in the city
Yesterday I had an appointment in the city where they have a big markethall inside with tons of vegetables, fruit, meat and fish and I always want to go there but we never feel like driving there just for that purpose. This time our appointment was 2 mins walking from the markethall so we had a good reason to check it.
There they were: pitayas! Not one stall but I believe it were 4 of them, sold pitayas. A few had the purple ones (which are amazing in colour but also stain everything that touches them) but the others sold the white flesh ones and I asked the price. I knew the online store where I order them sell them for 7.95 euros a kg, so 11,80 at the first stall seemed a bit high (but not impossible as this is imported currently) so I asked at the second stall and they asked 8,80. I thought that was fair and these looked better as well, ripe enough but not too dull in colour yet.
Smoothie time!
Although that one pitaya now cost me 5 euros something, at least it was twice the size of the pitayas we had in the boxes last year so that kind of justified it and I decided to cut it in half for two delicious smoothie moments for 3.
This time I sadly had to add a tiny bit of honey to the smoothie because the bananas weren't ripe enough as I went shopping for them at the end of a Saturday afternoon. At least I thought about getting them, otherwise this smoothie wasn't possible. It still tasted fabulous and I'm already excited to prep the second (and for now) last one in another smoothie. I may wait a day or so to hopefully have a bit more ripe bananas.
The little things
These little things such as a pitaya smoothie, not available year-round make me extremely happy and grateful, I absolutely enjoy it to the max.
Do you have a favourite smoothie yourself that you love so much?
