Welcome to the Nineties Friday, it been a couple weeks since I participated so here we go down the rabbit hole again! This is an event where you can share just about anything from the 1990's and just us the tag #ninetiesfriday or post under the community. It's a lot of fun, unless you hated the 1990's!
I have been meaning to include a movie that included the late, great Gene Hackman from the 1990's for a couple months now. Hackman passed away at age 95 back in February under very sad and strange circumstances, but let's not talk about all of that. Instead, I thought it would be fun to share a great movie with an all star cast including Hackman. That's definitely Get Shorty!
The film revolved around John Travolta as Chili Palmer, a mobster and loan shark from Miami who gets involved in the the movie business while retrieving money from Los Angeles. It also stars Gene Hackman as a B-movie film producer, Renee Russo as a minor actress, and Danny DeVito as a big time actor named Martin Weir. If you missed this one it's well worth watching, it's got a great story and is hilarious.
The Simpsons Episode: "Homer's Enemy"
In 1997 the Simpsons produced a dark and funny episode about Frank Grimes. It was Season 8 Episode 27, and it's hilarious. Poor Grimes has had a tough life working hard for with little to show for it and instantly hates Homer who has everything by being lazy. Here's a YouTube clip of some highlights:
Now for some music from the decade...
The Smashing Pumpkins
This band formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. They had some modest success off of their first two albums in 1991 and 1993, but it was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness published in 1995 that took them mainstream. It had several hit songs but none were bigger than "Bullet With Butterfly Wings":
Metallica
Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 this band had some successful in heavy metal throughout the 1980's. They finally broke into the mainstream with their self titled (or black) album in 1991. It took them over a year to make the album at a cost of more than one million dollars. Two band members credit the album for their divorces from their wives. It was a huge success making them very rich men, so in the end the sacrifice paid off with some classic music that you still hear today. Here's "Wherever I May Roam":
Live
These guys came together as a band in 1984 in York, Pennsylvania. I'm not exactly sure where that is in that state... It took them ten years to make mainstream success with their album "Throwing Copper" in 1994. Music is a tough industry to find success, you need a lot of talent, hard work, and some good luck never hurts either. Here is "All Over You" off that same album performed live:
Pearl Jam
This band was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington and quickly found success in the mainstream with their album Ten in 1991. The album stayed in the top 200 sold albums on the charts for over five years, putting them in the category of rock legends.. This song came off that same album, "Even Flow":
The Offspring
Formed in 1984 in Garden Grove, California it took these guys quite awhile to hit the mainstream. They had a great following in California for years, but in 1994 the album Smash changed all of that. Here is "Gotta Get Away" off that same album:
That will wrap up this Nineties Friday post. I hope you enjoyed it. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and thank you for all of your support. It deeply appreciated! Have a great weekend everyone!
