The birthday of the tram in our city is celebrated in autumn. Every time it's a bit of a lottery - the autumn weather is very varied and poorly predictable. A fine autumn rain can charge the whole weekend. A sunny day can be cold and windy - the autumn wind can easily get under light autumn jackets. A grey rainy morning can change to warm sunny weather - or vice versa. But this time we were lucky with the weather, the day was quite warm, sunny, and not too windy. The public dressed for the walk on this day very differently: someone came in a down jacket, someone in a light windbreaker, someone in shorts and a shirt.
The Smolenka River is one of the small rivers of St Petersburg. This river flows in an area where you can find historical buildings of different periods: separate old buildings of the XIX century, and blocks of mass construction of the XX century, and modern high-rise buildings, for which suddenly found a place among the old houses, when the cost of land has risen sharply. The Smolenka River separates Vasilievsky Island from Dekabristov Island; I started my walk on Vasilievsky Island and then moved to the opposite bank of the river, thus moving from the historical neighbourhood towards more modern buildings.
The Oredezh River is one of the most picturesque rivers in our region. The length of the river is a little less than 200 kilometres, some parts of the riverbed are geological natural monuments, in other places the scenery has not received official monument status, but is no less beautiful. One of the protected natural monuments is the outcrops of rocks of the Arukyula horizon of the Middle Devonian. To be honest, I have just read about the Arukyula horizon of the Middle Devonian on the Internet, but locals and tourists call these outcrops more simply - Devonian sandstones. Bright red cliffs of the Oredezh river canyon reach in some places the height of 20 metres.
The Upper Garden in Peterhof was under restoration for several years. The territory of the garden was surrounded by a high fence, and only the employees of the museum-reserve knew what was going on in the garden. Finally in August this year the garden was opened for visitors. I immediately added to my diary the task ‘to wait for good weather and go for a walk in this garden’. But first it was too hot, then I was caught up in a whirlwind of other urgent matters... At the beginning of October it became clear that I could not put off this walk for the future, otherwise I would have to postpone it until next year.
The day was warm and sunny, so I decided to go for a walk in the park of the Forestry Academy. This institution of higher education was originally located in Tsarskoye Selo, but in the beginning of the XIX century it was decided to move the Academy to St. Petersburg. The move took place in 1811. The educational and residential buildings were surrounded by a huge park.
Creating eco-trails has become very popular recently. The first trails of this kind seemed like a gimmick, and I used to make lists of new trails to visit. But gradually such trails are becoming more and more numerous, and the choice of interesting routes is becoming more diverse. This time I decided to take a walk on the trail called ‘Spruce Hills Hiking Ecological Trail’.
