Last night I finished watching a series that left me shocked, for its psychological content, its masterful performances, the depth and intensity of the plot and its unexpected outcome. It is the miniseries "The Crowded Room".

Inspired by true events, this psychological thriller immerses us in the life of Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland), a young man with an enigmatic past, who is arrested for participating in a violent shooting in New York City in 1979. Detective and tenacious psychologist Rya Goodwind (Amanda Seyfried) is assigned not only to solve this case, but also to try to tackle Danny's mind, who is reluctant to cooperate.

Intrigued by the young man's complexity and the lack of congruence in his version of events, the psychologist is given the task of having a series of interviews with Danny within the cold walls of the prison, which triggers deep and revealing confessions. They are moments of great tension, because from the beginning, Danny shows a certain hermeticism, sometimes violence, sometimes sarcasm, which makes the psychologist feel more and more interested in discovering what is behind each of Danny's postures.

As the interviews between Rya and Danny progress, viewers are transported to the boy's past, unearthing the fragments of a life marked by violence, loneliness, bullying, confusion and a complex relationship with his stepfather, in addition to the emotional abandonment of his mother, who is more concerned with pleasing her partner, deciding or preferring to turn a blind eye to what happens to her son. It is his memories that make us understand many crucial moments that define his personality, leading him to the day of the shooting in Manhattan.

In this thriller, we get to know all the important people in his life, who are the possible influences that make us understand his mental state and the circumstances that surrounded him throughout his life.

His emotional labyrinth is marked by a broken life, a fractured childhood and a lonely adolescence, where pain and trauma predominate, and in every corridor of this mental labyrinth, pain is always present, a silent pain that consumes him little by little.

“The Crowded Room” not only focuses on the investigation of the shooting, it also dives into unveiling painfully deep topics such as the moments lived during childhood, Danny's mental health and the desperate search for identity.

This miniseries, only 10 episodes long, raises questions about his reality, the influence of his past on his present and the incredible capacity of the human mind to protect itself by employing unusual mechanisms. As the truth begins to come out, Rya is faced with the possibility that in Danny's mind there are much darker secrets than she could ever imagine.

On the other hand, and no less important, it makes us reflect on the upbringing of our children, not to leave them alone, to listen to them, to talk to them, to always be there for them, no matter who they are, because that little child to whom we are not paying due attention, is the adult we are forging and the future we are giving him or her depends on us.

This is all I can say about this miniseries, as the least I intend to do is to fall into revelations that could ruin the viewer's experience and the idea is not to make spoilers. Anoche terminé de ver una serie que me dejó impactada, por su contenido psicológico, sus actuaciones magistrales, lo profundo e intenso de la trama y su desenlace inesperado. Se trata de la miniserie "La Habitación Abarrotada", o "The Crowded Room", (título original).

Inspirado en hechos reales, este thriller psicológico, nos sumerge en la vida de Danny Sullivan, (Tom Holland), un joven con un pasado enigmático, que es arrestado por participar en un violento tiroteo, en la ciudad de Nueva York, en el año 1979. La detective y tenaz psicóloga, Rya Goodwind, (Amanda Seyfried) es asignada, más que para resolver este caso, para intentar abordar la mente de Danny, quien se muestra poco dispuesto a colaborar.

Intrigada por la complejidad del joven y la falta de congruencia en su versión de los hechos, la psicóloga se da a la tarea de tener una serie de entrevistas con Danny dentro de las frías paredes de la prisión, que desencadena en profundas y reveladoras confesiones. Son momentos de mucha tensión, pues desde el principio, Danny muestra cierto hermetismo, a veces, violencia, otros, sarcasmos, otros, una intensa timidez, lo que hace que la psicóloga se sienta cada vez más interesada en descubrir lo que hay detrás de cada postura de Danny.

A medida que las entrevistas entre Rya y Danny avanzan, los televidentes somos transportados al pasado del chico, desenterrando los fragmentos de una vida marcada por violencia, soledad, bullying, confusión y una relación compleja con su padrastro, además del abandono emocional de su mamá, quien está más pendiente de complacer a su pareja, decidiendo o prefiriendo hacerse la vista gorda a lo que sucede con su hijo. Son sus recuerdos, los que nos hace entender muchos momentos cruciales que definen su personalidad, que lo van llevando hacia el día del tiroteo, en Manhattan.

En este thriller, se dan a conocer a todas las personas importantes en su vida, quienes son las posibles influencias que nos hace entender su estado mental y las circunstancias que lo rodearon durante toda su vida.

Su laberinto emocional está marcado por una vida rota, una infancia fracturada y una adolescencia solitaria, donde predomina el dolor y los traumas, y en cada pasillo de este laberinto mental, está siempre presente el dolor, un dolor silencioso que lo consume poco a poco.

"The Crowded Room" no se enfoca solamente en la investigación del tiroteo, también se sumerge en develar tópicos dolorosamente profundos como los momentos vividos durante la infancia, la salud mental de Danny y la desesperada búsqueda de identidad.

Esta miniserie, de solo 10 capítulos, nos siembra dudas sobre su realidad, la influencia de su pasado en su presente y la increíble capacidad que tiene la mente humana para protegerse empleando mecanismos insólitos. A medida que la verdad comienza a salir a la luz, Rya se enfrenta a la posibilidad de que, en la mente de Danny, existen secretos mucho más oscuros, de lo que ella jamás podría imaginar.

Por otro lado y no menos importante, nos hace reflexionar acerca de la crianza de nuestros hijos, de no dejarlos solos, de escucharlos, de hablar con ellos, de estar siempre para ellos, por encima de quien sea, porque ese niñito al que no le estamos prestando la debida atención, es el adulto que estamos forjando y de nosotros depende, el futuro que le estamos dando.
