With the upcoming release of the Michael Jackson biopic, today I'd like to talk about one of my favorite songs, "Man in the Mirror," produced by Quincy Jones and written by Siedah Garrett. It was released in 1988 on the album *Bad*. When you listen to it, it's immediately clear why I love it so much. It's more than just a song to me; it's an ode to introspection and reflection. The melody, a pop ballad very much in Michael's style, perfectly complements the lyrics. It starts very slowly and gradually builds as the chorus approaches, emphasizing the main message: "Change comes from within."
A propósito del estreno de la película de Michael Jackson que se acerca, hoy quisiera hablarles de una de las canciones que más me gusta, me refiero a Man in the Mirror producida por Quincy Jones y compuesta por Siedah Garrett lanzada en el año 1988 para el álbum Bad. Cuando la escuchas salta a la vista porque me gusta tanto, es más que una simple canción para mi, es una oda a la introspección y a la reflexión, la melodía, una balada pop muy al estilo de Michael acompaña perfectamente la letra, comienza muy lento y va in crescendo a medida que se acerca el coro para enfatizar el mensaje principal: “El cambio viene desde adentro”
The lyrics do indeed invite us to look around us to discover all that is there and how we can be of service. We often complain about the atrocities we see: hunger, war, violence, but we ignore that the worst evil is our own indifference to the suffering of others. That's why one of my favorite lines from the song is: “Who am I to be blind, pretending not to see their needs?”
La letra en efecto nos invita a mirar a nuestro alrededor para descubrir todo lo que hay y en que podemos servir, a menudo nos quejamos de las atrocidades que vemos: el hambre, la guerra, la violencia, pero ignoramos que el peor de los males es nuestra propia indiferencia ante el dolor ajeno por eso una de mis frases favorita de la canción es: “Who am I to be blind, pretending not to see their needs?” (¿Quién soy yo para pretender ser ciego para ver sus necesidades)
It invites us to reflect on the individual responsibility we have regarding social problems, revealing that if we want a better world we must start by changing our own way of thinking; the change must be endogenous and then externalized; we must recognize our failures and work to correct them.
Nos invita a reflexionar acerca de la responsabilidad individual que tenemos respecto a los problemas sociales, revelando que si queremos un mundo mejor debemos empezar por cambiar nuestra propia manera de pensar, el cambio debe ser endógeno para luego ir exteriorizándolo, debemos reconocer nuestras fallas y trabajar por enmendarlas.
As I said before, the music perfectly complements the powerful message as it builds towards the chorus. I also love the gospel choir by The Winans and Andraé Crouch because I feel it emphasizes the idea; the choir sounds like hope, innocence, and blessing.
Como dije anteriormente la música acompaña perfectamente el mensaje tan poderoso cuando va in crescendo cuando se acerca el estribillo, además amo ese coro gospel de The Winans y Andraé Crouch porque siento que enfatiza la idea, el coro suena a esperanza, a candidez, a bendición.
It's not just a beautiful song, nothing more. For me, it's a song about transcendence, healing, and building from within. If you become a better person, then yes, you can change the world. And if you share the message with others, instead of just complaining or criticizing others' flaws or assigning blame, I'm sure that message will gain even more strength. No es una canción hermosa y ya, solo eso, para mi es una canción para trascender, para sanar, para construir desde dentro, si tú te vuelves una mejor persona entonces sí, podrás cambiar el mundo, y si compartes el mensaje con otros, en lugar de solo quejarte o criticar las fallas ajenas o repartir culpas, estoy segura de que el ese mensaje cobrará más fuerza.
