Some of the applications I have built for you need a real backend. They need a server that runs all the time and can respond to requests at any moment. These kinds of applications cannot be hosted on Github Pages, because Github Pages only supports static files. It does not run server code, and it does not allow background processes. So I had to look for another solution.

At the beginning I used OnRender, also known as render.com ... It was easy to set up and it worked well for small tests. But there is a big problem with Render. When a service is not used for a longer time, the server goes to sleep. When someone tries to open the tool again, the server has to wake up first. This can take many seconds. It is not very nice for users, because they think the tool is broken. Another limitation is that you only get a certain number of monthly hours for free. After these hours are used, the service stops. For small hobby projects this becomes a real issue, because I often cannot control how many people use the tool.

For a while I tried to solve this with UptimeRobot. I used it to ping my services every 15 minutes so that they stay awake. But even that did not work well, because the free plan of Render only gives about 750 active hours. When you have several projects running at the same time, you hit the limit very quickly, and everything stops anyway.

Because of this I finally decided to move my services and tools over to Vercel. Vercel does not have these strict limits and the services stay online without going to sleep. It also has a much better system for serverless functions and background work.

Updates: The kind @acidyo asked if it would be possible to use different colors to distinguish between the individual levels of Hive Power Ups. That's no problem, and I implemented it right away. Now it is also possible to recognize the amounts of powered-up HIVE by color. Here,

  • everything under 100 HIVE is white
  • everything over 100 HIVE is green
  • everything over 1,000 HIVE is blue
  • everything over 10,000 HIVE is purple
  • and everything over 100,000 HIVE is orange
