The Cheshire cat is one of the most endearing characters in English literature. When Alice encounters him during her adventures in wonderland, this humorous piece of dialogue takes place
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."
When their conversation is over, the mercurial kitten fades and leaves behind only his grin for the surprised (and very confused) Alice.

"Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin," thought Alice; "but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in my life!"
