Watching a Movie and Reflecting on Diversity
I watched a Japanese movie on Netflix the other day titled This Is I. I had really wanted to watch it, but I don’t usually subscribe to Netflix. One of my students gave me a gift certificate, so I was finally able to watch it. It touched me deeply.
This Is I is a Japanese biographical drama inspired by the life of entertainer Ai Haruna. The film follows a young person struggling with gender identity while dreaming of becoming an idol. Facing bullying, family conflict, and social prejudice, the protagonist gradually finds the courage to live authentically with the support of a doctor who helps with gender-affirming treatment. The story explores identity, resilience, and the search for belonging.
I knew quite a lot about her background, but I didn’t know about her surgery or her doctor. It is such an impactful true story. Japanese LGBTQ2S+ culture has been visible for a long time, but society can still be quite conservative and strict toward minorities. Perhaps things are gradually improving, but there are still many difficulties.
Many moons ago, when I was in Australia, I was invited to my friend’s friend’s wedding party. They were a lovely couple—one originally from Japan and the other from Australia. I met many guests who had moved from Japan. They told me about gay life in Tokyo, and most of them said they felt freer and happier living in Australia.
I was actually living in a well-known area for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. On the day of the parade, I couldn’t go home for a while because the main street was so crowded. Still, I felt happy seeing so many joyful, gentle, and kind people. At my workplace, many LGBTQ2S+ employees, including my bosses, worked openly and freely.
Now, here in Canada, there are also many LGBTQ2S+ people who warmly welcome one another. As a minority myself, I also feel welcomed by them. Of course, I still face racism sometimes. Beyond gender, I hope this world can become a place where people from many different backgrounds, and nature itself, are accepted and respected. I sincerely hope peace will come to this world as soon as possible.

映画をきっかけに、多様性について思うこと
先日、Netflixで「This Is I」という日本の映画を観ました。ずっと観たいと思っていたのですが、普段はNetflixに加入していませんので観られないと思っていました。ちょうど生徒さんからギフトカードをいただいたので、それをきっかけに観ることができました。とても心を打たれる作品でした。
この映画は、タレントのはるな愛さんの人生に着想を得た実話をベースに描かれたドラマです。性自認に葛藤しながら、アイドルになる夢を追いかける主人公の姿が描かれています。いじめや家族との葛藤、社会的な偏見に直面しながらも、医師の支えを受けて、自分らしく生きる勇気を少しずつ見つけていきます。アイデンティティやレジリエンス、そして居場所を探すストーリーでした。
彼女の背景についてはある程度知っていましたが、手術や医師との関係については詳しく知りませんでした。本当に心に響く実話だと感じました。日本ではLGBTQ2S+の存在は以前から割とオープンでしたが、社会は依然として保守的で、少数派に対して厳しい面もあるように思います。以前よりは少しずつ良くなってきているのかもしれませんが、それでも多くの困難があるのが現実だと思います。
ずいぶん前、オーストラリアに住んでいた頃、友人の友人の結婚パーティーに招かれました。日本出身の方とオーストラリアの方の素敵なカップルでした。そこでは日本から移住してきた方々にも出会い、東京でのゲイライフについて話を聞かせてくれました。多くの方が、オーストラリアのほうが自由で幸せだと感じていると話していました。
その頃、私はシドニー・ゲイ・アンド・レズビアン・マルディグラのパレードで有名なエリアに住んでいました。パレード当日は人が多すぎて、しばらく家に帰れないほどでしたが、通りにあふれる人々の明るさや優しさに触れて、とても幸せな気持ちになったのを覚えています。職場でも、多くのLGBTQ2S+の方々が、上司も含めて、のびのびと働いていました。
現在暮らしているカナダでも、LGBTQ2S+の人たちは互いを温かく受け入れています。私自身もマイノリティの一人として、歓迎されていると感じています。もちろん差別もありますが…。性のあり方だけでなく、さまざまな背景を持つ人々や自然そのものが互いに尊重し合える世界になってほしいと願っています。そして、この世界に少しでも早く平和が訪れることを心から願うばかりです。
