De todas maneras y pese al horario y la poca emoción del Gran Premio de China, sigo eligiendo ver las acciones de la máxima categoría del automovilismo mundial.
A Chinese tale
I hesitated to set the alarm at the unwelcome hour of 3:40 AM, mainly because the previous day had been intense. I watched the F1 Sprint race, which ended almost at 1:00 AM. I went to bed and got up at 6:00 AM to pick up my son-in-law and head to the José Jurado golf course, where I had also arranged to meet
@fermionico to give him some lessons in that beautiful sport. Not that I can do much about it, but rather I'm the one who should be taking classes, but as my grandmother always said, if there's no bread, there's no cake.
The truth is that I couldn't rest in the afternoon either. I had to pick up my friend at the Metropolitan Airport since he was returning from a nice vacation in Florianópolis with his wife. I had to return home to accommodate them for a few days until they returned to Esquel, their residence, which is very close to where my son and his family live. We had a snack, talked about those vacations, and after a frugal dinner, we all went to bed, exhausted.
But I got up and watched the main F1 race from the Shanghai city circuit in the Republic of China. Honestly, I don't know who came up with the idea of making the Earth round and with time zones that vary so much. This mess makes it feel like Chinese torture to watch a race at a time when only Morpheus should be awake and working, but hey, that's how things are and whoever likes peaches can put up with the fuzz, my grandmother is here again.
I thought the race would be hard-fought and, of course, exciting. The truth is, I was completely wrong. It was dull, with few overtaking situations and not even a safety car, something that would have added excitement to a dull Grand Prix.
The race started with Piastri in the lead, just as he had been in qualifying. The new development was that the papaya-colored team's second car made a good jump on Russell's Mercedes to take second place. The Englishman tried to recover the lost position, but it was only a matter of seconds. He quickly fell behind, resigned to the superiority of the McLarens.
Something didn't quite show up at that start. From a wide angle, I noticed that the Kick Sauber team's distinctive apple-green single-seaters went off the track. The result was that both drivers were significantly behind, thus helping the slower drivers, in this case Dohan and Lawson, who were left in the awkward position of being last in line.
By lap five, there was a slight and unprecedented collision between the Ferrari teammates, resulting in damage to the front wing of Charles Leclerc's car. However, this didn't affect his performance and he hounded the Englishman for many laps. Seeing that the Monegasque driver was faster, the team politely asked Hamilton to let him pass, which he did, proving that he is not only an exceptional driver but also a gentleman.
And little else. Not even tire changes caused any overtaking or delays, and only one retirement. Poor Alonso couldn't find peace with his Aston Martin and had to pit when his brakes gave out. Not even Max Verstappen could do anything to break his boredom; he settled for a smooth lap, but at a slow pace, unusual for the world champion who usually outruns his car. Only at the end, seeing the problems that began to appear on Leclerc's injured Ferrari, did he speed up his pace somewhat, securing fourth place.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the race occurred in the battle between two rookies, Dohan and Hadjar. Although his Alpine was noticeably slower than the latter's RB, the former insisted on not letting him pass. In addition to a collision, there was another dangerous situation when he blocked the driver's path with a sudden maneuver. Of course, there were consequences, and the Alpine driver was penalized. This young man is not holding his own, and more will be added to the two points deducted from his super license at the Australian race.
After the race, we were surprised: well, after the checkered flag and the awards ceremony, the two Ferraris and Gasly's Alpine were disqualified for failing technical inspection. I have no further information, and we'll have to wait for more news to come to find out what happened.
And it was 1 2 for McLaren, Piastri won his third race in the category and Norris had to settle for second place after suffering a brake problem in the final laps that caused Russell to make an unexpected approach, but he couldn't reach him, although he took the third step of the podium.
In any case, despite the schedule and the lack of excitement at the Chinese Grand Prix, I still choose to watch the action in the highest category of world motorsport.
