The story
The story begins with Frances Adams who visits a fortune teller on a local fair with two friends back in 1965. She gets told that one day she’ll be murdered. Her friend laugh it away, but Frances becomes obsessed with it.
In the following years she keeps an eye on all inhabitants of her small British town which isn’t always appreciated by everyone.
Annie is the nice of Frances which she never met. A few days after she sent some of her aunts belongings back to her, Annie receives a letter that she is included in the will of her aunt.
On the day that the will is going to be explained, the prediction of the fortune teller comes true and aunt Frances gets killed.
The will states that the one that is able to solve the murder first, will inherit all her belongings which include a large country house with a piece of land around it, a farm, and a Rolls-Royce.
In the country house, Annie and the other relatives find the research and clues her aunt has done over the years. What follows is a puzzle that Annie must try to solve.
During her research she discoverers a lot about the people in the small town. Everybody seems to have its own secrets.
Annie finds her aunts diary and reads about the things that happened it the past. This story and the story about the investigation of Annie in the present slowly grow towards each other in the book.
My opinion
The book is a real ‘who has done it’. It’s like playing cluedo. It’s a well written book. Along the way you get to know the different people that live in the village and everyone seems to have a reason to have committed the murder.
It is not only the mystery that is interesting, but also that fact that someone can be so obsessed with being murdered that it affects everyone around them.
I started reading this book a couple of days ago and I really enjoyed it.
It's a well-written book. From the beginning, I was curious about how it would end and who did it. Throughout the book, I suspected several people, so it was also unpredictable. I finished the book in a few days (I had a few days off).
I could recommend this book to everyone that likes reading mysteries.
