¿Cual ha sido la percepción, además de la preferencia cuando se define un conteo con el sistema ABS, del fanático asistente a los estadios de la MLB en la primavera? Bueno, al dejar ver los resultados de una encuesta realizada por el sitio MLB.tv, pareciera que una amplia mayoría del público apoya el emplazamiento del sistema y la nueva regla sobre los conteos de bolas y strikes: 69% prefiere al ABS y 31% querría seguir pensando que los humanos son preferibles ¿Porqué todavía una cantidad razonable de personas prefieren que los umpires prevalezcan? No hay misterio: el miedo al cambio, la sensación de que las máquinas pueden hacerlo mejor que nosotros, los tradicionalistas, entre otras razones, constituyen la franja opositora. Pero como las cosas avanzan hacia delante y la sombra de toda duda se desea eliminada del juego, son más quienes prefieren cortar por lo sano. Y hoy, el sitio de la MLB publica estadísticas acumuladas a lo largo de varios años, donde se lee que el juego no se vio modificado en su dinámica por culpa del sistema.

What has been the perception, besides preference, of fans attending MLB games this spring when the ABS system is used? Well, according to the results of a poll conducted by MLB.tv, it seems that a large majority of the public supports the implementation of the system and the new rule on ball and strike counts: 69% prefer ABS, and 31% would prefer to continue believing that human umpires are preferable. Y, aunque las discusiones continúan abiertamente, parece claro que el ABS escalará en los ahora todavía reticentes. Uno de ellos reparó en el argumento que esgrimen los defensores, sobre la cuestión de los lanzamientos debajo de las rodillas al espigado Aaron Judge, perjudicando su carrera por tener que luchar con una zona más amplia que la del promedio. And, although the discussions continue openly, it seems clear that ABS will gain traction among those still hesitant. Seguimos reportando criollos destacados durante los entrenamientos primaverales. Uno de ellos ha sido el receptor de los Mets de Nueva York Luis Torrens. El hombre se fue ayer de 2-2 en la blanqueada propinada por los metropolitanos 5 a 0 ante los Astros de Houston. Luis es quien acecha la titularidad de otro venezolano, en caso de que falle: Francisco Alvarez. Y al batear como lo anda haciendo, comparado con lo frío de la primavera para "Paco", podría estar acumulando los clavos para el ataúd del titular. Un AVE de .429 con tres impulsadas y tres imparables en 7 turnos, incluyendo un cuadrangular y 3 carreras impulsadas, son una muy buena noticia para él, con el fin de conservar el puesto como back-up de Alvarez. Lo merece, quienes le conocen, no paran de hablar sobre lo buen compañero y profesional que es Torrens.

We continue to report on outstanding Venezuelan players during spring training. One of them has been New York Mets catcher Luis Torrens. He went 2-for-2 yesterday in the Mets' 5-0 shutout of the Houston Astros. Luis is vying for the starting catcher position of another Venezuelan, should Francisco Alvarez falter. Otro receptor criollo que está dando de que hablar es Yohel Pozo de los Cardenales de San Luis. También bateó de 2-2 ante el otro roster de los Astros (recuerden que en primavera los equipos pueden armar hasta dos equipos con todos los peloteros disponibles, ya que es la única época del año donde los rosters no tienen restricciones). Tiene acumulado AVE de .333 y también se ha ido para la calle. Pozo tiene un gran reto por delante, en un equipo que tiene exceso de receptores y donde un puesto como back-up de Iván Herrera, es el objetivo general para el resto. Llegar a posicionarse para superar el corte, será lo que le quite el sueño a Yohel, pero si sigue bateando como lo está haciendo, superará las expectativas de propios y extraños. Ya el año pasado demostró que nada tiene por buscar en ligas menores. Y aunque hay exceso de hombre en ésta posición, los Cardenales siempre se han caracterizado por formar excelsos receptores. Ojalá Yohel haga el grado definitivamente.
