How I Make Peace Between Healthy Food and Junk Cravings #LOH 236

When it comes to food, I don’t have a strict rule. I eat what I feel like, depending on my mood, energy, and of course, money. Some days I’m all about cooking something fresh and healthy. Other days, I just want to buy something quick and tasty, even if it’s junk. But if I’m being honest, I love cooking my own meals more than buying food outside. There’s just something special about homemade food maybe it’s the way it makes me feel or the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly what I’m eating.

Homemade food
Growing up, I was used to eating home cooked food. My mum was always in the kitchen, making something nice. We hardly ate out unless it was a special occasion. That habit stayed with me. Even now, I enjoy entering the kitchen, turning on music, and cooking a proper meal. Whether it’s rice and stew, yam porridge, or vegetable soup, I feel more satisfied when I eat food I made myself.
But let me not act like I don’t fall for junk food sometimes. I do. There are days I’m too tired or just not in the mood to cook. On days like that, shawarma, noodles, small chops, or even a chilled bottle of Coke start sounding like a great idea. I know it’s not the healthiest choice, but at that moment, it’s what I want. And honestly, I don’t judge myself for it.

Eating out
Still, cooking healthy meals wins most of the time. I enjoy preparing dishes with fresh ingredients adding vegetables, using less oil, and seasoning in accurate proportion. I like the fact that I can control what goes into my food. It gives me this small feeling of accomplishment, especially when the food comes out sweet.
I’ve learned how food affects how I feel. If I eat too much junk, I feel heavy, tired, and even bloated. But when I eat clean, I feel more alive and active. That alone pushes me to make better food decisions. It makes me know what works for me.
One thing I’ve learned is that balance is important. I don’t believe in cutting out junk food completely, but I also don’t let it take over. If I eat something fried today, I’ll try to drink more water or add fruits to my meals. If I go a few days eating out maybe because of work or busy schedule, I always find my way back to my kitchen to cook something simple and nourishing. It’s not a strict plan, it’s just what feels right for me.
Sometimes people assume I’m on a diet because I don’t eat junk all the time. The truth is, I just love how my body feels when I eat good food. I’m not trying to lose weight or impress anyone. I just enjoy the taste, the smell, and the peace that comes with home-cooked meals.
SO WHAT TEAM AM I ON? I’d say I’m on Team “Cook it if you can, but enjoy the shawarma once in a while.” Cooking healthy meals comes first for me, but I still allow myself to enjoy small treats here and there. Life is short, and food is one of the good parts. So why not enjoy it.
