Para mí, ese sueño se hará realidad este sábado 5 de abril, cuando mis compañeros del curso de fotografía y yo expongamos nuestro mejor trabajo en la Galería de Arte Concha Ferrant como parte de la graduación de este año. La exposición marcará el final de un semestre de esfuerzo y creatividad, desde el primer momento en que toqué una cámara en septiembre de 2024 hasta la elección final de las fotografías. En este blog, quiero compartir el proceso que seguí para exponer mi obra.
Have you ever dreamed of seeing your photos hanging in a gallery? For me, that dream will come true this Saturday, April 5, when my fellow photography course members and I exhibit our best work at the Concha Ferrant Art Gallery as part of this year's graduation. The exhibition will mark the end of a semester of effort and creativity, from the first moment I touched a camera in September 2024 to the final choice of photographs. In this blog, I want to share the process I followed to exhibit my work.
El primer paso// The first step
Mientras más fotos hagas y más te familiarices con las técnicas de fotografía, más seguridad tendrás a la hora de mostrar cómo ves el mundo. Lo más recomendable es tener muchas fotos para luego seleccionar las que se podrían exponer. Si no conoces bien la galería en la que vas a exponer tu obra, es importante que sepas, al menos, su reputación, porque en algunas se cometen actos vandálicos contra las obras de los artistas y en otras se han perdido obras que nunca han podido recuperarse. Por suerte, la Galería de Guanabacoa nunca ha tenido estos problemas y goza de la aceptación de artistas y público.
The more photos you take and the more you become familiar with photography techniques, the more confident you will be in showing how you see the world. The best thing to do is to have a lot of photos and then select the ones that can be exhibited. If you do not know well the gallery where you are going to exhibit your work, it is important that you know, at least, its reputation, because in some galleries vandalism acts are committed against the artists' works and in others works have been lost that have never been recovered. Fortunately, the Guanabacoa Gallery has never had these problems and enjoys the acceptance of artists and the public.
Preparación de las obras//Preparation of the works
Selecciona tus mejores fotos. Este es un proceso muy tedioso; muchos de mis compañeros no sabían cuáles eran las mejores entre todas sus imágenes. Creo que entre todos nos pasamos tres horas viendo, argumentando y seleccionando. En mi caso, ya sabía cuáles presentaría, porque cuando se las mostré al profesor después de tomarlas, lo primero que me dijo fue: «Esto es lo que estamos buscando». Después de seleccionar las fotos, tuvimos que abrir un programa de edición de imágenes (Photoshop). En el caso de mis fotos, tuvimos que ajustar las medidas para llevarlas a imprimir y borrar un pequeño detalle que había en el cielo. Luego de terminar el proceso de edición, fuimos a imprimir, que fue toda una locura: creo que nos pasamos una semana organizándonos, buscando dónde íbamos a ir, dónde estaban los precios más asequibles y en qué tiempo lo haríamos, porque todos trabajamos y a veces nos complicamos. Imprimir fotos para una exposición requiere un nivel de detalle que no todas las máquinas de impresión tienen o las personas encargadas de este proceso saben cómo hacerlo. En nuestro caso, nos quedamos en Guanabacoa y fuimos a un lugar que se llama Trimagen, que pertenece al estado. Mis fotos las pagué con 7 HBD, su equivalente en MLC. Cuando las vi impresas por primera vez, me emocioné mucho. En mi opinión, quedaron muy bien.

I think we all spent three hours looking, arguing and selecting. In my case, I already knew which ones I would present, because when I showed them to the professor after taking them, the first thing he said to me was: “This is what we are looking for”. After selecting the photos, we had to open an image editing program (Photoshop). In the case of my photos, we had to adjust the measurements to take them to print and delete a small detail that was in the sky. After finishing the editing process, we went to print, which was crazy: I think we spent a week organizing ourselves, looking for where we were going to go, where the most affordable prices were and in what time we would do it, because we all work and sometimes we get complicated. Printing photos for an exhibition requires a level of detail that not all printing machines have or the people in charge of this process know how to do it. In our case, we stayed in Guanabacoa and went to a place called Trimagen, which belongs to the state. I paid for my photos with 7 HBD, its equivalent in MLC. When I saw them printed for the first time, I was very excited. In my opinion, they turned out very well.
Propuesta y Aprobación//Proposed and Approved
En este paso se tienen que enviar los datos personales a los curadores como el nombre y los apellidos y el título de las obras individuales o si es una serie, que figurarán en los pies de foto de las obras y en los catálogos el día de la exposición. En mi caso, expondré una serie y no me fue tan difícil encontrar el título ideal, ya que la profesora del curso nos guió muy bien en este proceso. Para encontrar el título nos recomendaron, pararnos frente a nuestra obra, qué es, qué estoy viendo. Bueno en mi caso es una iglesia, pero no voy a poner de título iglesia, porque la idea es atrapar con el título y que no sea tan obvio porque lo que queremos es hacer pensar al espectador, entonces lo mejor sería buscar sinónimos de iglesia o palabras que sin mencionar que es una iglesia nos den la idea de lo que trata la foto. Y así fue como encontré mi título ideal.

Well in my case it's a church, but I'm not going to title it church, because the idea is to catch with the title and not be so obvious because what we want is to make the viewer think, so the best thing would be to look for synonyms of church or words that without mentioning that it is a church give us the idea of what the photo is about. And that's how I found my ideal title.
Curación y montaje//Curing and assembly
El día del montaje es muy duro y agotador. Antes viene la curaduría, que consiste en decidir cómo van a ir las fotos en los marcos. Como contamos con pocos marcos para exponer, se colocaron dos fotos en un mismo marco y se les dio un orden para que fuera visualmente comprensible para otros artistas y el público. Los montadores tienen realmente una tarea difícil, y en este caso los montadores y curadores de la galería son las mismas dos personas. A mí me resultó entretenido porque es algo que nunca antes había hecho y me gusta aprender cosas nuevas, pero seguro que hacer todos los meses lo mismo cansa. La galería de Guanabacoa cuenta con la única montadora mujer de toda La Habana: Viviana Rivero. Para el montaje, debemos asegurarnos de que cada obra esté bien colocada con las medidas correctas y de que el cristal del marco no tenga basura ni detalles, al igual que la cartulina sobre la que van pegadas las fotos. Además, hay que trabajar las fotos con guantes porque la grasa humana es la más difícil de quitar y podría estropear una fotografía para siempre.
The mounting day is very hard and exhausting. First comes the curatorship, which consists of deciding how the photos will go in the frames. Since we had few frames to exhibit, two photos were placed in the same frame and given an order so that it would be visually understandable to other artists and the public. The mounters really have a difficult task, and in this case the gallery mounters and curators are the same two people. I found it fun because it's something I've never done before and I like to learn new things, but I'm sure doing the same thing every month is tiring. The Guanabacoa gallery has the only female assembler in Havana: Viviana Rivero. For the mounting, we must make sure that each work is well placed with the correct measurements and that the glass of the frame is free of debris and details, as well as the cardboard on which the photos are pasted. In addition, it is necessary to work the photos with gloves because human fat is the most difficult to remove and could spoil a photograph forever.
La inauguración será este sábado a las 5:00 p. m. en la Galería Concha Ferrant de Guanabacoa, y la exposición se titula «Punto de partida II». Nunca he expuesto en una galería y nunca imaginé que lo haría, pero seguro que será una experiencia enriquecedora. Todos los integrantes del curso estamos preparados para recibir críticas o elogios.
