Dear Garden Journal,
Two and a half years ago my man and I bought an acre of land in the mountains of rural Argentina. The land was affordable, off the beaten path and full of natives trees. Besides the trees though, the land was overgrazed by a heard of goats, cattle, and random horses. All the herbs and shrubs were eaten to the ground and there were little to no flowers.
Then, we put a fence around the perimeter of the land so that the annual and perennial herbs could recover. And now, a couple years on, we have seen amazing results. Wildflowers, everywhere!!
My favorite flowers are these little purple ones that are constantly covered in bees. They are called "Ramillete de Campo" which translates to "Bouquet of the Countryside". And as of the last few days there were lots of butterflies flocking to these flowers too - monarchs, painted ladies, catula crescents and more that I can't think of the name at the moment.
And then there is the morning glory climbing over rocks, growing up trees, and the new fence we have established. I know a lot of gardener's hate this aggressive vine but I love the colors.
Isn't it amazing? All we had to do was protect the land and the flowers grew all on their own.
Of course I have a flower bed of herbs and blossoms that I planted myself. These are the last of the zinnia flowers that we will see this fall. Around it is yarrow, catnip, and a couple of echinacea too. At the moment we don't yet live here and just spend our afternoons working on the house that you can see in the background. The goal is to finish the house & move in within two years (hopefully less) and you know there will be gardens as far as the eye can see!
