The Unhappy Truth...

Say the truth, and the truth shall set you free. This is something that has been touted at us for a very long time, but as time has gone by and I’ve grown more mature, one of the realizations I’ve come to have is that the truth is subjective. A topic I believe I’ve touched on before. But then, during a conversation with a friend today, I realized something else; we all claimed to like and want the truth, but most of the time, we only like and want the truth that we agree with.

There are many people who will never want to admit that they’re wrong, and if your truth in any way brings up the idea that they made a mistake, they would do everything in their power to suppress it. Hell, they would even attack you if it meant keeping the truth the way they want it.

And sadly, we see this everywhere. When you drive, and your car gets pulled over by the cops, you give them everything they ask for, and when they start going extreme, and you call them out on it, you hear things like “don’t teach me my job!”

Another example can be doctors, many of whom have one kind of annoying pride, often at the detriment of their patients. You could be going to a doctor over and over, treating the same illness and getting the same result, but they won’t care. When you suggest they try something else to get a better result, they shush you for trying to teach them their job. After all, they’re the professionals there and not you. We’ve had cases of doctors dismissing some symptoms simply because they didn’t want to admit that an initial diagnosis was wrong.

Now, this is not for all doctors, of course. But I’ve seen enough of them to inspire an entire post dedicated to just them. That’s how crazy it is.

People hate getting critiqued, they see it as a personal attack on their person and pride. Especially in this part of the world, they go with the idea that as long as you’re not smiling and singing my praises, then you hate me. If you can say bad things about me and mine, then you are my enemy. And enemies deserve to die! So, what do they do?

They use the police to arrest and throw them in jail. You could share an honest opinion about something you spent your money on, and you’ll find yourself getting dragged online, you’ll get trolled and ridiculed, all because you spoke a truth that many people didn’t agree with. And the funny thing about all this is that, as it stands, everyone believes they know the truth. They believe they are the right ones and everyone else is a liar.

And that simply boils down to the core of what human nature really is. It takes a lot to accept cold, hard truths, regardless of how they make us feel. The truth should never change, no matter how much we want it to. But that’s how things are, sadly. Many of us just don’t like truth, we only prefer the truth we agree with.
