Too Many Violins???

Too
TEEHEHEHEHEHEHEH.... NOOO, never too many violins!
So, for a project for Easter, I will be playing a handful of the Rosary Sonatas by Biber together with my wife, interspersed with Easter readings that is a gift and a token of appreciation from us to the church and music foundation in exchange for their hosting of our concert series.
Now, the Biber Rosary sonatas are a set of 15 sonatas plus one solo sonata that are based upon the Catholic Stations of the Cross. And each requires a violin that is in a unique and different tuning...
... we will be only doing the five sonatas from the Sorrowful Mysteries... as it is an Easter thing, but we will also add in the last solo sonata, the Guardian Angel as well. The music will serve as reflection time between the readings and the whole "concert" is designed as an Easter meditative service.
So, the touch-points for the readings will be:
  • Christ on the Mount of Olives
  • The Scourging at the Pillar
  • The Crown of Thorns
  • Jesus Carries the Cross
  • The Crucifixion
  • Guardian Angel
... and someone else will be doing the choosing of the poetry/readings and a radio announcer will be the reader/presenter. We just have to provide the music.
And so, as part of that, I have needed to borrow a few extra Baroque violins to make sure that I have a dedicated violin to match each sonata and it's relevant tuning system!
So, three of the violins in the picture above are mine... and three are borrowed! For a violinist, having more and more violins is like being in a lolly shop! They are all so different, and of course, all of them are good... but the borrowed ones are not ones that I would choose for myself. But we all have different tastes, and so that is absolutely not a comment on the quality of the instruments, but more about taste and "fit". We all look for different things in our musical partners!
A month and a bit to get used to these new partners, and to learn the music as well! This is going to fun... or foolish!
