SPS Flywheel

SPS-DEC flywheel

I am writing this post to perform a difficult task. My goal is to explain the SPS-DEC flywheel to the Splinterlands community. Trouble is I am probably not the most qualified person to do this, as the concept is most likely from @yabapmatt. If I remember correctly, I have learned the concept from a Splinterlands Town Hall from late 2021 to early 2022. So the first time I was trying to do is to reconstruct a timeline for the history of Splinterlands. There have been historical efforts to do this in the past, and there are written records for 2021 and 2022 by the team. I am quite certain that I have seen earlier record of this by the team, but I can't track it down.
So I thought this is a perfect job for a Large Language Model (LLM). We also have a complete track record of event from the following blogs:
I used grok.com for this in the stand-alone version, because some of the output of community news related to Splinterlands is on X. Below is the output of a month-by-month timeline as seen by the LLM. Please take this with a grain of salt. This is neither the official output not verified. I am writing my personal blogpost to verify the output. My goal is still focused on the Flywheel which is the title of this post.

Output from LLM: Splinterlands Timeline

Below is an enhanced month-by-month timeline of Splinterlands’ history, from its conceptual origins before the launch in May 2018 to today, April 25, 2025. This timeline builds on the previous versions by incorporating additional details from the Hive.blog posts of @splinterlands, @splinterlands, @splinterlands, and @splinterlands, as well as cross-referencing with other available Splinterlands documentation and community discussions on platforms like X. The timeline includes pre-launch development, key milestones, expansions, economic updates, and community initiatives, while critically analyzing the game’s evolution, economic strategies, and community impact.
I am going to use a code block because I don't want to tag a bunch of people and also don't want to find and replace bunch of @.

Human Analysis: First use of the word Flywheel

I just mentioned this to Royal, that it is scary that I just replaced a person's job with an LLM. While that is true but still this output requires more work to summarize what I am looking for.
I was looking for the first use of the word FLYWHEEL in relation to Splinterlands. It was published on April 17, 2022. I say this is good research by LLM on blockchain, which keeps a record of all our posts.
It is @bravetofu who first wrote the word on a post!
https://peakd.com/splinterlands/@bravetofu/splinterlands-asset-flywheel-v1-april-2022-edition
I discussed this personally with Brave. We both agree that Brave likely heard the word from an earlier townhall from the team, where most likely @yabapmatt mentioned the word. There was an earlier record of the written word on discord, on March 8, 2022.
Since it is just a comment, I suspect, that it was likely mentioned during a February 2022 townhall, because people commenting on discord typically do not have very long memory, especially when considering first use of a term.
I also read the release notes but there is no mention of the word or the concept during April 2002 or earlier. So the credit of using the word 'flywheel' first officially in a written post with proper context goes to @bravetofu.

What is a Flywheel?

In the simplest term, the SPS flywheel mechanism in Splinterlands is a tokenomics system designed to create a self-reinforcing cycle between its two primary tokens: Splintershards (SPS), the governance token, and Dark Energy Crystals (DEC), a product-backed stable coin. This mechanism aims to stabilize DEC’s value, incentivize player participation, and enhance the ecosystem’s sustainability. Let us review the two tokens in question based on modern times, because in the past their utility and definitions were different.
SPS (Splintershards): A governance token on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) that empowers holders to vote on game proposals and influence the direction of Splinterlands through a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO).
DEC (Dark Energy Crystals): A stable coin soft-pegged to $1 = 1,000 DEC, used as the in-game transactional currency for purchasing items like booster packs, cards, and rentals. DEC is backed by the value of in-game products.
The SPS-DEC flywheel mechanism in Splinterlands is a tokenomic system that creates a self-reinforcing economic cycle between the governance token SPS (Splintershards) and the stablecoin DEC (Dark Energy Crystals). Here’s a short and simple bulleted summary:
  • DEC Demand Increases: Players use DEC for in-game purchases (e.g., booster packs, rentals), driving demand and pushing its price toward the peg (1,000 DEC = $1).
  • DEC Above Peg: When DEC’s price exceeds the peg, it’s costlier to buy on the market, incentivizing players to burn SPS to mint DEC at a fixed rate (e.g., $1 worth of SPS = 975 DEC, soon (next Tuesday) to be
    $1 worth of SPS = 995 DEC
    ).
  • SPS Burning Reduces Supply: Burning SPS to mint DEC removes SPS from circulation, increasing its scarcity and potentially its value.
  • SPS Value Boosts Staking: Higher SPS value encourages players to stake SPS for rewards, play more games for SPS rewards, which drives more engagement
  • More Engagement Drives DEC Demand: Increased player activity and governance participation enhance the game, attracting more players and further increasing DEC demand, restarting the cycle.
If DEC is below peg, it is cheaper and easier to buy DEC from the market, so player typically do that. That eats up the 'excess' DEC that is available in the market, driving the price towards peg. They key concept here is that fact that the team must ALWAYS a product or multiple products on the shelf that is priced in DEC, can be purchased with DEC (or credits) and that product must be desirable!

What ensures flywheel?

Since, DEC rewards have stopped now since Feb 27, 2025; there is no way to get DEC rewards from game. You can only 'get' or 'create/mint' DEC as follows:
Get
  • sell, rent existing 'edition' cards (not locked soulbound cards)
  • sell non-card in-game market products like title, totem etc.
  • offer SPS for rent
  • fees earned in pools as dividend
  • 3rd party market fees, if you have created a market
  • referral bonus
  • purchase from market/pool
Create/Mint
  • Burn SPS for DEC
  • Burn 'edition' cards for DEC
Basically most of the 'get' column is tiny for 99% of the players except the purchase. If DEC is at, near, or above peg, purchasing DEC from pool or market is not viable. So, it is cheaper to burn SPS (if you have it liquid) or purchase SPS from the market/pools and burn it for DEC. Credit purchase works the same way, team gives you the DEC (if they have it) or they burn SPS if they don't. Currently team is sitting on a lot of DEC during the ongoing sale.
So there you have have it.

That is the flywheel.
