Hello, very good morning. Today I am going to tell you about my contact with a very particular bird of the Venezuelan plains. In the backyard of my house, I have very high walls, and the houses that surround me, some have roofs, others have second floors, leaving my wall lonely and free for the birds that sometimes come to visit and perch on the edge perhaps to rest from long flights, or looking for some leftover food left by my pets.
Generally, it is the cats who spend more time in that space, since I don't let them go outside to prevent them from getting lost or something happening to them. But they need that contact with nature, and sometimes they don't want to go in at night and lie down on a piece of furniture I have in that place. There they admire the moon and the stars at night, or the sunrise with its gentle breeze.
For some months now, I have been noticing a very particular bird from my area of the plains, which flew over my house, but did not perch anywhere. Until this week, when I went out to the patio early in the morning, I sat down on the furniture to have a coffee, and there was this beautiful species, resting on the edge of the wall to let me admire its beauty.
I didn't want to make any sudden movements so as not to scare her away, or use the camera's flash for the same reason, so I tried to take some pictures of her, in the dim light of the sunrise. What surprised me the most, was that my kittens saw her coming and only turned to see her and continued resting, that is, they were already used to her visits, and I was the only one who saw her up close in my yard, for the first time.
After taking some pictures with its particular gestures, I just kept admiring it, and not doing anything rude to give it confidence so that it would visit me whenever it wanted to continue to fascinate me with its demeanor.
This bird is known as Tecolote Llanero (Athene cunicularia), and lives in many fields of the American continent. It is also known as Búho Llanero or Lechuza Pocera, and is the only species of bird that lives on the ground. I tell you a little more about it, according to what I researched on the web:
The tecolote llanero is a small owl with long legs, which inhabits open places with undergrowth. It is sandy brown with white spots and yellow eyes. It is active during the day and at night when it goes out to hunt its food, which consists of insects and small mammals. It nests in burrows that have already been dug by prairie dogs or turtles. Information Source: Tecolote Llanero - Ebird As you can see, they do not inhabit trees or nest in the branches of trees like other birds, and are completely harmless. It is said that in some areas of America, this species is in danger of extinction.
I say goodbye until a next adventure in contact with nature, thank you very much for visiting my blog. Happy day to you.
