Living abroad often makes you more aware of your own cultural background. For me, one of them is the realization that Japan is truly a “wrapping culture.”

Even after moving to Germany, I still feel the urge to wrap things; my lunch box, clothes for travel, or even flowers picked from the garden. There’s something gentle and intentional about wrapping that feels deeply rooted in me.

In Germany, where environmental awareness is high, reusable bags are common. But they are bags and focused on practicality. Wrapping, on the other hand, might be seen as unnecessary effort. I actually appreciate this practicality; it feels very German 😉

I sometimes see fabric used for gift wrapping. Brands like Dr. Hauschka or Lush offers beautiful cloths. But I often wonder—what happens to the fabric afterwards?

When I first moved here, I used to bring wrapping cloths back from Japan whenever I visited. But I would see fabrics in local shops and think, “This would be perfect for wrapping.” So a couple of years ago, I started making them myself.

One interesting thing is that fabric in Germany is usually about 150 cm wide—wider than in Japan. So when I buy 50–60 cm in length, I can make two or three pieces. I’ve started giving them as gifts to friends, and even selling a few at local markets ☺️

Over time, I’ve found my preferred size (50cm x 50cm & 75cm x 75cm) and even made a template board to standardize the process. I’m now preparing to develop this into a proper product with packaging and an online presence.

This growing love for wrapping has led me to host a workshop next month, focusing on Japanese textile culture. Participants will be able to choose what to make—mini furoshiki, sashiko pincushions, coasters, azuma bags ... or they can bring anything 😉

I hope to share the quiet joy and satisfaction of Japanese wrapping culture and tradition!
