Hello everyone, I know always start my needlework posts with excitement but this one is an emotional post for me. It’s more about the reason behind why I made this amigurumi. I know I always say every project is special but this is probably the most special one ever.
About three years ago, I lost my elder sister to cancer and then last year, I lost my aunty to cancer again. And just in the beginning of the year, someone close to me was also diagnosed of cancer. Although, he isn’t my family by blood, he is by love. I was very angry when I heard the news but after a while, I began hoping for a miracle.
Just last week, I was told he actually beat cancer and he’s doing very well now. I wasn’t surprised when I heard the news. It was actually something I was seriously looking forward to. We decided to go and see him last week so I thought of the perfect gift for him. And then I remembered he loves anime with his favorite anime character being Tanjiro. I couldn’t find any easy pattern so I had to make something up. I must also say I took a lot of inspiration from the amigurumi queen,
@littlesorceress.I am not even a fan of anime in anyway and didn’t know what Tanjiro was so I had to watch demon slayer to know who Tanjiro was. I spent sometime following the storyline so that I could narrate all the episodes that he missed to him after presenting Tanjiro.
I spent about three days in between my busy schedule to make this anime character.
I started with the head and in as much I thought it would be easier, it wasn’t. Actually, no part of this character was easy to make. It has so many details that you definitely cannot miss. I started the head with a magic ring and then increased it with two single crochets in each stitch till I got to the size I wanted. I then stuffed it with cotton to make it fuller. I then moved to the body where I increased the stitches in each row till I got the size of the body that I wanted and then I ended that part.
I then used single crochet with white to make the belt on the body I made in black and added two buttons.
I continued with the hands and legs. For these ones, I made a magic ring and then just built on them with single crochet in each stitch till I reached the length I wanted. In each step, I made sure to include all the details to create a near perfect result.
For the ears I made a magic ring with 5 single crochets and just secured it. And the earrings, I made three rows of single crochet and then using a needle, I made the red dot in between.
For the kimono, I used green and black to make checkered pattern. This was easily achieved using tapestry. I changed the color of yarn after make three double crochet.
I made the sleeves differently and then wrapped it around the hands.
For the hair which was the most time consuming part, I made the hair cap first and then made the hair strands one by on using the leaf method.
I then assembled all the parts, gave it eyes, eye brows and mouth when I was done. I found out I forgot to add the scar on his head later after I delivered it to him.

This is the first anime character I’ve ever made and it was very complicated for me. However, the smiles on his face made me so happy and he didn’t want to let go of me when he hugged me. I’m so happy I could make this for him because it means a lot to me that he fought so hard to defeat this disease. These are the moments that make me cherish crocheting and I don’t think I ever want to stop making people smile.
