You win some, you lose some

But at the end what matters more is that how best we enable our next generation to lead a responsible life.

Last two months have been pretty occupied for him, with a new learning curve introduced - this time some real life learning to drive the two wheeler as well as the car. This year he is very busy, preparing for competitive and when everyone else at home was against the idea of teaching him driving, I strongly pushed it and taught him two wheeler driving. My wife and in-laws were fearing about he getting into the road on his own - many people, especially youngsters now a days are doing very rash driving and even though he may drive well, others can hit him causing injuries. But then will the kid never drive just because of that fear ? Am I not driving ?

Unless you are borne with a silver spoon, in India, you can't manage without learning driving. For middle class people like us, driving not only gives us freedom from depending on others, but also we save a lot by using a two wheeler for all nearby shopping. You simply can't use the car for everything - it will fill like a burden after some time. So I first taught him to drive the scooty inside the society premises. Within couple of days, he was confident to go outside but wanted me to sit with him - our kids need a push from us as they have not been exposed to tough situations of real life needs. All along they have been leading a comfortable life, focusing solely on studies ( which he has done well), but then real life needs more - and the only way you can learn them is by facing them yourself. And nobody can guarantee that, nothing will happen - driving is purely a reflection of thoughts executed in real time - you may be fully right - but if the other person does wrong, it will impact you. All we can do is to be careful, as much as we can, to the best of our abilities and I am very glad to say that the kid has obeyed all my guidance, to be a responsible and mature driver.

Today was his driving test for both the two wheeler and the car and I must say, he drove pretty well than everyone else, giving the indicator at the right places. No one else was giving indicator, even some were not able to do it rightly, touching their feet. Recording is not allowed, but I managed to record a small clip for his lifetime memoir.

And for the car driving, I let him go through a training school for two times - the second time bringing some fine touch. And after that, I went with him to drive our car for one hour, every day, though different routes. Sitting beside him in the front, guiding him how to deal in different situations, gave him lot of confidence - some real on road confidence with some tricks from me. In India, there is no real rule on road - it's always people's choice to behave as they want and if someone can drive here, then I am sure, they won't fail anywhere else in the world.

So with all the learning from last two months, he was able to clear the driving test in the first attempt - a big confidence boost to certify that he is a good driver. I am not sure, if you have given the driving test in a fair way or not, but the way they tell you to come back, it's very tough to accomplish that and only two people passed today, including him. And I personally believe, if they will be very strict on everyone clearing this test in a fair way, then there won't be any accidents - because everyone will be a good driver then.

So today is a memorable day for both of us - it's a big win for me to bring him through all these transformative experience that will make him a better man. Of course I will lose the power when he takes over - but there is happiness in that loss - after all, the purpose of our life (as parent) is to make them stand on their own feet. Now everyone in the family cheers up - men will always have to take the risk, isn't it ?
