It is said that people, upon seeing him, would keep their distance, for they believed that around the middle of his life, as he himself describes, he had been in Hell, having previously passed through another, lesser hell, Purgatory, before reaching, according to him as well, the golden circles of Heaven and Paradise: the Italian poet, Dante Alighieri.
In fact, most of the cathedrals of his time, on some of their remarkable illuminated portals, still depict, in all their gruesome detail, that ‘journey to Hell’ or ‘journey to the underworld,’ reserved for every transgressor, regardless of those who, motivated, like Dante, by a ‘Faustian’ fever for Knowledge, had the courage to volunteer.
In essence, the allusions to Hell and the punishments to which sinners were exposed hardly differ from those narrated by Dante in his 'Divine Comedy,' and proof of this can be found in this beautiful illustrated doorway, which also serves as one of the main entrances to the great Primate Cathedral of Toledo.
Dicen que la gente, al verle, se apartaba de él, pues, en efecto, creían que hacia la mitad de su vida, como él mismo describe, había estado en el Infierno, pasando previamente por otro infierno menor, el Purgatorio, antes de alcanzar, según él también, los círculos dorados del Cielo y del Paraíso: el poeta italiano, Dante Alighieri.
De hecho, la mayoría de las catedrales, contemporáneas suyas, en alguna de sus notables puertas ilustradas, muestran, todavía, con todo lujo de escabrosos detalles, ese ‘viaje ad ínferos’ o ‘viaje a los infiernos’, que le está reservado a todo transgresor, independientemente de aquellos, que, motivados, como Dante, por una fiebre ‘fáustica’ de Conocimiento, tenían el valor suficiente como para presentarse voluntarios.
En el fondo, las alusiones al Infierno y a los castigos a los que se exponían los pecadores, apenas difieren de lo narrado por Dante en su ‘Divina Comedia’ y una prueba de ello, la tenemos en esta preciosa puerta ilustrada, que, además, constituye una de las entradas principales a la gran catedral Primada de Toledo.
