I don’t know what there is to say about a boring, miserable day, other than the obvious. The monotony, the waiting, and of course the rotten feeling in your chest that you should be doing something more. Her eyes seemed closed as the tv bleated on in the background for the fifth hour today. Claire had been stuck at home, or rather, her sister’s home, house sitting while she was out on another one of her ‘work’ holidays. To the Maldives this time.
She flicked through the channels and sank into her couch. A glance across the room reminded her of her sister’s achievements, and her own shattering lack of them. Bestselling novels, her doctoral study, pictures of her, her husband, and her beautiful child, placed neatly alongside each other like a shrine to her success. Claire rammed her spoon into the tub of ice cream and licked at the empty calories like a cat. Undoing her belt, she let her newly formed ‘tire’ from the last year spill out of her jeans: more space for junk food, of course.
