Once again, I have the honor of sharing my trumpet performance with the Music community. "Send In The Clowns" is a musical theater song composed by Stephen Sondheim for the musical A Little Night Music (1973). I've had the opportunity to hear versions by Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra, and Barbra Streisand. The title is quite ironic because it speaks of when clowns come out to distract the audience when something doesn't go as expected. The lyrics address lost situations and the comical fate of life. The original key is Db major, but in my case it is F major. If I had been assigned to do the arrangement, I would have done it in 4/4, but I found this score with quite striking time signatures like 12/8 with changes to 9/8. I have always been intrigued by the relativity of time and the creativity of each artist to achieve it from complexity to simplicity.

If there's one thing a musician develops, it's a good sense of humor. There's a powerful connection between music and humor. Since I was a child, I've loved to laugh, and thanks to music, I've had the happiest moments of my life. When you practice a musical instrument, sing, and dance, you connect with your emotions. In times of stress, laughter comes to the rescue; it's an antidote to discouragement; it relaxes you and connects you with happy memories of the past. My trumpet teacher loved jokes; he had a collection of funny books, and he always made us laugh. It was a way to teach us through laughter, love, and to free us from routine. When you're in a choir or orchestra, there's a wonderful spirit of unity and camaraderie. There's always music, smiles, anecdotes, and jokes. Without a doubt, the most beautiful profession in the world.

Send in the Clowns

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground
You in mid-air
Where are the clowns?
Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around
One who can't move
Where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns
Just when I'd stopped opening doors
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
Sure of my lines
No one is there
Don't you love farce?
My fault, I fear
I thought that you'd want what I want
Sorry, my dear
But where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns
Don't bother, they're here
Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer
Losing my timing this late
In my career?
But where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns
Well, maybe next year...
