To All The Keepers Of My Love || LOH Contest #276

Forever Friends

All five friends, three hundred miles apart,
yet wrapped in the cardboards of love as if we were near.
The birds sing in light tunes, calling for our reunion,
and we cheer together.
Choosing each other is all we have.
In a room filled with black lips of paint,
we come with doves and send the molds away.
Like a potter to his clay,
I’ll always be right here
with some water in a jar
and maybe some honey to keep things sweet.
Single, married, jobless, childless, confused, tired, happy, grieving,
my hand will always reach out to comfort and jolly with all five of you.

My Beautiful Ló

The stars in the galaxies
measure not against the tiny fragments of love running through your veins.
I sit by the fireplace in the cold night,
and your touch warms my skin the most.
If I pause for breath,
you revive me with your sweet kisses.
If my feet grow cold,
you cuddle them until they speak again.
Tonight, I dip my right hand into a small bowl of alginate,
letting it form a mould
of the love I carry.
When you return, there’ll be my hand to meet yours,
and every morning, I hope you wrap your fingers between that cast hand as if I were there.
I will always be there,
even in an empty room.

To My Parents

I’ve known you both since my fingers first loosened their grip on the world.
Your voices, I know by heart.
Your faces, I can tell by touch.
Mummy likes tea,
Daddy likes coffee,
yet both mouths drink from one cup
to show us what it means to love outside one's self.
There was no food at home the other day,
you gave us your last portions of bread,
and filled your own stomachs with laughter.
The world will know I came from you,
and your longsuffering with love made me the woman I am today.
I will forever cherish you,
and make you proud.

Two Gorgeous Sisters

Sixteen and twenty were the numbers of your ages when I arrived,
A big, fat baby who stole mummy’s time
and made daddy’s pockets lighter.
Yet you cared, carried me, and loved me.
You’ve seen me through my silly mistakes,
accepted my lone nature,
shared your precious gifts with me,
loved my imperfections,
and said to the world,
“That’s our baby sister.”
The rain may come today,
but as long as the sun shines,
I remain devoted to loving you both for the rest of my life.
Your kids will be my kids,
my home will be yours,
your joys everlasting,
and my care unending,
for there is no place
I’d rather call home than with you two.

I could think of a thousand beautiful things to give my loved ones for this year's Valentine but a heartfelt poem like this one, dedicated to the people I refer to as the keepers of my love, came to me as the perfect gift for them this season. I laid my feelings bare while writing this original poem, with the intention to reassure them of my love, and I hope that love carries all of us for the rest of our lives.
