When the Digital Realm Becomes Annoying

2025-04-03T01:55:36
Hello there! People that read me on a screen. We all live a very digital lifestyle, some of us even work in the digital realm, meaning we have to deal with devices all day long.
There are some things that can make a whole day in front of the screens really annoying, let's talk about my digital pet peeves.

Notifications

Oh my! I hate notifications, and that even with the configurations there is not enough control on what I actually want to receive notifications for, which is like two discord servers, a couple of group and personal chats, calls and messages from my parents and sister, and that's it. I don't wanna see the phone glowing every time it is "checking" to see if WhatsApp has messages, or the weather, I can see through the window if there are clouds or not.
My phone in particular doesn't give me much control. For example, when I silence the notifications, I wan't phone calls to still ring, but every time I turn off notifications it also turns off call notifications, and I haven't found way to exclude them. The amount of times my family has called and I don't notice even when the phone is under my nose. My old phone allowed me to have special contacts that triggered notifications even when those were turned off.
I think we should get way more control over notifications and permits.

Pushy Subscription Messages

You either offer a free service or don't do it, and "free" is not the word, because we eat a shit ton of ads every day. I'm ok with consuming the ads, although I have some issues with that too, that goes on the next topic, but getting messages all the time about going premium, and even taking away security functionalities, like not allowing private messages from strangers, if you aren't premium, is closer to make me quite the app all together than it is to convince me to buy premium.

Ads, pushy and repetitive ads

Why? Why do people think that interrupting my fun and relaxing time, or my learning time, because I do learn a lot from tutorials and other forms or education content, why do they think that interrupting that with a loud intro, annoying voice, and useless information, will make me even look for their product? I just wait impatiently for the five seconds it takes to skip.
Ah, and if you give grace to an ad an watch it all, they thank you with a second one! Every time, when I skip, I get to my video, but when I'm showering and let the first add play, I get a second ad.
There is one that starts with a guy yelling (in Spanish)"NO! going to the market does't count as family time" and I hate it because it's annoying and loud, and I'm not the target audience because I never order delivery, and it's an ad for delivery. And it's so loud that I have to jump and lower the volume to not annoy the people around me. They should really change that, I've heard my dad complaining about it too.
I won't give anyone free publicity, so here is an annoying screenshot

Things that pop-up

I guess that is actually my pet peeve, all the pop-ups, jump-scare sounds, everything that interrupts my activities unnecessarily, and then not having the option to have exceptions when necessary. It's like they want your attention all the time, they want you anxious, watch this ad, watch the next, respond now, looking at a notification can trigger 30 minutes or more of doomscrolling.

I'm looking for ways to have more control over my notifications, I might just get a second phone, I'm thinking an older model, those with buttons, that only my family and close friends can have the number of, so it only will sound when it's actually important.
Also, special mention to this thing people are doing of inserting the sound of the battery of the airpods dying.
Thanks for reading, what is your Digital Pet peeve?
