Karen and Emilia were good friends. They had known each other for almost two years. However, Karen always had a thing for Emilia’s boyfriend, Matthew. He was all she ever wanted in a man. Tall, handsome, a beautiful smile, kind, calm and romantic. Many times, she wished she could have him, but of course, he was dating her friend, who obviously was madly in love with him.
Karen realized that she was in love with Matthew too, and she hated the fact that of all the men in the world, it was her good friend’s boyfriend she was in love with. Karen tried to bury her feelings for a while until one day, she decided that she could have Matthew to herself.
The next week, while Emilia was away on a trip, Karen took that opportunity to make her move. Her plan was to seduce him. She went to Matthew's house, wearing something very enticing. She knocked on his door and Matthew opened.
“Hi Karen, what brings you here? Emilia is not around, she traveled” Matthew said.
“Yes, I know she’s not around. I came to see you” Karen said.
That was surprising to Matthew, especially with the fact that she wore a very skimpy dress.
“Okay, so what did you come to see me for?” Matthew asked.
“I was bored at home and I just wanted to gist” Karen replied.
They got talking and suddenly, she kissed him. Matthew paused for a minute, trying to process what had just happened, but before he could react, Karen got all over him and they had an intimate moment.
When they were done, Matthew felt really bad and didn’t say a word to Karen. However, Karen didn’t feel guilty. She was happy that her plan worked.
Days later, they continued having an affair behind Emilia’s back. At times when three of them were together, Karen would give Matthew flirty looks in such a way that Emilia wouldn’t notice.
As time went on, Karen saw that Matthew was still very much in love with Emilia despite their secret affair, so she decided it was time they got separated. One day, Karen visited Matthew, and she knew that Emilia was also on her way to his house. While they made out, Emilia walked in, catching them in the act. Emilia felt like her chest was about to explode. She couldn’t believe her eyes.
“Karen, how could you do this to me? How could the both of you do this to me?” Emilia asked with tears in her eyes as she walked out.
Matthew ran after her.
“Emilia, please wait. I’m really sorry. I can explain” Matthew said, grabbing her hand in a desperate attempt to make her stay and listen to him.
“Explain what exactly? That you’re having an affair with my friend? How long has this been going?” Emilia asked.
Matthew stood there in silence.
“oh, you’re silent now? You’re the worst. Both of you are. I don’t ever want to see your face again” Emilia said as she stormed off.
That was obviously the end of the relationship. Emilia and Karen’s friendship also ended.
Karen tried to establish herself in Matthew’s life. She wanted to be the woman in his life, but his heart was still with Emilia.
In order to make sure she was tied to him, Karen decided to fake a pregnancy.
“I’m pregnant Matthew,” Karen said.
“What! Is it mine?” Matthew asked, with a worried look on his face.
“Yes of course, you’re the only one I’ve been intimate with this year” Karen replied as she handed a fake test result to Matthew.
Matthew sat on his sofa which now seemed uncomfortable to him. Karen had never seen him disturbed like that before. But she didn’t care as long as it would make Matthew choose her.
Matthew was a responsible guy, despite his mistakes. He was ready to take responsibility for the child and also take care of Karen. He asked Karen to move in with him, which she gladly did. He wanted to be able to provide for and look after Karen and his child.
As time went on, Matthew increasingly got excited by the idea that he had a child on the way. Despite the fact that he wasn’t prepared for the pregnancy, he loved the child (or at least what he thought was his child). He was very sweet to Karen. Every day, on his way back from work, he would get Karen’s favorite snack. Some days, she would send him shopping with a list of things she was craving for, even late at night. Matthew happily did these things. He did whatever she wanted. He provided everything she wanted.
Karen knew that it was about time the baby bump started showing. She knew that soon, Matthew would be wondering why there is no bump on her tummy yet. So she decided that it was time she made the pregnancy go away. She didn’t want to fake it anymore. After all, she now had Matthew to herself. He had been amazing to her.
One morning, she broke a devastating news to Matthew.
“I need to tell you something. Please promise me you won’t get mad” Karen said.
“Go ahead, I’m listening. I won’t get mad” Matthew said.
“I terminated the pregnancy” Karen said.
“You did what? Without asking me first? Why on earth would you do that” Matthew said with his voice raised.
He was so angry. His face turned red. He couldn’t fathom what he had just heard.
“I’m really sorry. I realized I’m not ready to be a mother yet. I can’t have a child now. I’m not ready” Karen said, pretending to cry.
“So you didn’t think about all of this all this while. Now, you went ahead to terminate my baby without telling me?” Matthew said.
If only he knew there was never a pregnancy in the first place, if only he knew. Karen wanted to tell him, but she knew it would make him go crazy. He was already so angry.
“I can see now that you only think of yourself. You’re so selfish. You have turned my life upside down. I want you to pack your things and leave my house immediately” Matthew said.
“Please, don’t do this. I love you. We are meant to be together” Karen said, crying for real this time.
“I don’t want to see you here when I get back” Matthew said as he left the house to clear his head.
Karen wondered what would have happened if Matthew knew the actual truth. She couldn’t even imagine his reaction. It was a secret she was willing to take with her to the grave.
