It was a cloudy, bright and sunny Monday morning. I woke up and checked the clock. It read 7:45am. I jumped out of my bed in shock.
“How could I have slept for so long?” I wondered.
I was supposed to be at work by 8am and I woke up just fifteen minutes prior. I had to figure out how I was going to freshen up, prepare and arrive at the office within fifteen minutes.
I got a call from my colleague, John.
“Hey man, hope you’re already on your way to work. Remember, the boss said we have to be here early today. There’s so much work to do. She’s already here” John said.
“I’m in trouble man. I just woke up. I don’t know how I overslept” I said.
“What! You have to prepare quickly and get here as fast as you can” John said
“I’ll try my best” I replied as I ended the call.
By the time I left my house, it was already 8am. It would take me about ten minutes to get to work, so I was in a hurry. Unfortunately for me, within a minute, the sky turned dark and it began to drizzle. That was the beginning of a bad day for me. While I stood by the road, waiting for a cab going to my destination, it rained heavier. I didn’t leave my house with an umbrella, so I got soaked.
Eventually, I got to work late and I got into trouble for it. It was a very hectic day at work. By midday, I had developed a back pain and a headache. My day went from bad to worse when I dipped my hands in my pockets and couldn’t feel my money. I searched around in a desperate attempt to look for the money. I didn’t find it. I decided to ask my colleagues.
“Please did any one see cash notes laying around? I am looking for mine” I asked.
The silence that ensued showed that no one saw it.
“It must have fallen off on your way to work” one of my colleagues said.
My heart sank. No one would be happy losing money just like that. I had plans for that money so it was really disappointing that I lost it.
While I was trying process it, my phone tripped off and refused to come back on. After so many failed attempts to turn it back on, I gave up on it, and just left the phone on my table. It was a day filled with a series of unfortunate events.
I sat on my chair, with a gloomy face. The sadness on my face was obvious.
“You look like a man the world has crushed” my colleague, Grace said.
“Is it that obvious?” I asked.
“Yes. I’ve been observing you for a while now. It seems you are having a terrible day” She said.
“Yes, I am. Thing aren’t just going my way today, the pain at my back isn’t helping matters” I replied.
“Come with me, let me buy you lunch. I think you need a distraction” Grace said.
She took me to a restaurant and we ordered one of my favorites, Burgers. Food had a way of brightening my mood, and she knew that.
We had a nice conversation as we ate, and I could feel myself getting better. Grace was always a good listener. Talking with her was fun and satisfying. Suddenly, I realized my headache had seized, the pain at my back had calmed down, and I was feeling lighter.
“I just sent you some money to replace the one you lost” Grace said
“For real? Thank you very much. I really appreciate this” I replied in excitement.
“I couldn’t bear to see you looking so sad.
Grace made my day. She was just what the doctor ordered. She completely changed my mood with her kind gestures.
“How’s your back?” Grace asked
“My back is better. The pain has gone down” I replied with excitement.
After our time out, we went back to the office. I decided to try turning my phone on one more time. Surprisingly, it came on.
“I guess your phone needed some rest” Grace said on seeing the phone come on.
“Ha-ha. It seems that way” I replied as I laughed.
“I guess your day wasn’t totally bad after all” she said.
“Thanks to you” I replied.
That was the beginning of a stronger, more beautiful friendship between Grace and I. We have been there for each other through the good times and the bad times. We became like family.
