a curious minke whale wanting to play

By @thomasjmitchell2/3/2018nature

We were loading the kayaks and getting ready to collect the kayakers from the ship you see in the video and a minke whale decided to come over and investigate.

This curious little guy obviously developed a serious crush on these floating contraptions.

Minke whales are small baleen whales - only getting to about 10m|30ft in length and are very aggressive foragers around sea ice and ice floes. Their food is primarily krill - small shrimp-like crustacean that is the main food source for 99% of all animals in Antarctica.

In all my years of interacting with minkes around the world, this is by far, the most amazing interaction I have ever had. It did last for about 20 minutes before it decided he had enough fun and was time to go back on the hunt for breakfast. Honestly, I believe it had a slight identity issue, thinking he might have been a kayaker...
