I’ve been shuffling between gyms these past couple of days. First, because I genuinely enjoy trying out new spots and different machines. Second, because I’ve been trying to cut costs, although that plan took a hit when my organization changed things up, which was actually my original route. I ended up having to pay for a daily plan at another gym two days ago.

Anyhoo, with my usual schedule, the first thing I train on my upper body days is my chest. I like to kick things off with either an incline dumbbell press or an incline bench press, depending on what’s available. On this particular day, I started with dumbbells, and that’s when I noticed the gym had just picked up a new piece of equipment, a multipurpose machine that allows you to train pretty much any muscle group. What we did next was the chest fly.

Cable Flyes

I’ve always been a big fan of cable flyes on chest days. Lately, I’ve been trying to target my chest more so it grows in better proportion to my shoulders, and honestly, cable flyes might just be the secret weapon.

On this day, we set the pulleys at different levels, high, middle, and low, to hit all parts of the chest. One thing I introduced to the guys was crossing the cables over slightly at the end of the movement to get a deeper squeeze in the pecs. It worked. I felt the fatigue immediately, and even till today, the soreness is still there whenever I touch my chest. The last time I felt this kind of soreness was when I overloaded heavily with dips, dumbbell flyes, bench press, the whole works.

My Technique

First thing is my setup. I keep one foot forward and the other slightly behind for stability and balance. Then I spread my arms wide, letting the chest stretch properly, before pulling them across and together to get a solid squeeze at the center. The most important part for me is training close to failure. I make sure to push until it’s almost impossible to get another rep out. That’s where the real work happens. Overall, it was a great session and a very satisfying chest day.

Thanks for reading. Till next time.
