New Splinterlands Fanart - Felis Catsaber

Small Talk

I want to try something new. My past two drawings are both from Splinterlands and I've checked that you can also create your own new character so let's try that.
It's astounding to me that for a common archetype such as a cat person in anime or games, there's none like it in Splinterlands. They have one Rat person types which is Venari but no cat people.
So, let me introduce the first one in the list of the Felis archetype, the Felis Catsaber.

Drawing Process

I wanted to make a unique gladiator look for my this new character as a start. I initially thought of making him a knight but I thought that was too simple and too common so I tried to make it a more gladiator look.

Lineart

My initial plan was very simple, two swords, one long and one short and then I started adding more and more because it looked very simple and ended up with this look.

Sword

The sword is called the "Buster Sword", an homage to Final Fantasy 7's Cloud Strife. I just thought it would be much cooler than a regular sword and maybe because I was watching Final Fantasy: Advent Children the day before so that came to mind. The inner shirt and some of his gear also looked like Cloud's but I don't want to make just a complete copy because this is a Splinterlands Fan Art and not a FF7 Fan Art so I came up with this look.

Cloud Strife's famous Buster Sword

Skin and Face

I started adding base colors on the skin or fur, then on the face. It's a cat so I thought orange because of Garfield. Was it good? I don't know how to make it better though.

Adding Color on Clothes

I added colors I think would be compatible. I should've made it lighter because I didn't realize the browns were too dark until after I added the shadows and looked at it from afar.
While doing it though, maybe because I was zoomed in, it doesn't look as dark.

Add Shadows

For this fan art, I decided not to add any highlights. This might be the reason why it was too dark. I only added shadows because I am trying new stuff to see if it would work or not.
I am using a drawing tablet and one big advantage of it is I can use pressure on pen. The harder I press, the darker the colors would be. So, instead of using multiple colors as shadows like my usual, the layers and intensity of shadows depend on how hard I was pressing the pen. I used the Basic-3 Flow pen on Krita for it.

Add Background

For the background, I was looking for something my li'l kitty can stand on and I found an amalgamation of coral reef on Google. I got that, made it greyscaled and then applied A LOT of filters to flatten and make it weirder. It resulted in a pedestal-like thing that I wanted.
For the yellow starry background, this is a background that Splinterlands uses for their cards for Rebellion. I wanted to create a card so I added it.

Extras

I am very inspired and energetic today so I added a few more things after doing the main art. It might be because of the 2 cups of coffee or maybe because of something else. Who knows?

Lore

When the rift opened in Splinterlands, different creatures spread in Praetoria and began inhibiting the regions but not all of these new creatures are from the other world. Some of the creatures are natural inhabitants of Praetoria which evolved from the necessity to survive.
When the rebellion against the Chaos Legion started, a community of feline creatures started evolving. They started to stand on two legs and mimic the humans they saw. After knowing about the great Byzantine Kitty, they began to follow it as their God and the Byzantine Kitty granted these feline creatures its blessing for them to be able to protect themselves.
The first to evolve are the ones standing in the front line, they called themselves the Felis Catsabers. Their great reflexes allow them to survive the battlefield without any scratches and the divine blessing from the great Byzantine Kitty allowed them to survive lethal hits. The Felis Catsabers joined the rebellion with the promise of protection and to take care of their new generations who are just starting to know and take control of their new found powers.

Card Border and Others

The card border came from (Baron's Toolbox)[https://baronstoolbox.com/] that I found as I was hanging around Splinterlands Discord. I saw @Saydie mentioned about it and I googled it since the name "Baron's Toolbox" sounded cool. So, special thanks to @Saydie for mentioning it in Splinterlands discord

Felis Icon

For the new ability, "Felis" icon, I just did a quick slapdash of a cat face. This is just a draft of the ability as I wanted a new one specifically for the Felis archetype.

Card Example

The combination of high speed and Dodge allows the Felis Catsaber to land blows while being nimble to avoid attacks.
They can use their quick movements to sneak behind their targets unnoticed quickly dispatching the enemies.
Felis ability - For each adjacent unit with "Felis" ability, this unit gains +1 Speed and +1 attack. This bonus cannot be dispelled as long as there is a "Felis" unit beside it.
The Felis clan is a very close knit community. Their teamwork not only allow them to survive longer but also helps in taking out the enemies.

On the Other News

On other news, my Splinterlands journey is looking good. I got to Silver 1 on season end and reset back to Silver 3. Now I am back on Silver 2 and will probably got back to Silver 1 in a few days or hopefully, reach Gold.
