The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023) - Another Shitty Lesson - S02E02 - RECAP

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 2 delivered some action, I say some action because it was not impressive although not boring, aside from that it felt stupid at times but because the characters are stupid but if we think about it thats how it has to be so they can loose, this is a survivors series so its not the best armies on Earth going at each other. During the episode I do have to recognize that character development made it even better than the premiere since we starting to reveal some of the characters real motivations, is playing a double agent and those power hungry in the back. I'm seriously loving that we still have six more episodes to go in this season, its staring slow but might close strong just like season one, two more episodes is a huge improvement over the typical six episode format we have been getting with other Walking Dead spin offs lately, those shorter seasons always felt rushed and incomplete, like trying to tell a full story in half the time. Honestly eight episodes still feels a bit tight but it's definitely better than six, this are different times are we are way passed the full 16 episode treatment but I think 10 12 would be the sweet spot to really let these stories breathe without feeling stretched thin, anyway this episode picked up right where we left off with Maggie now part of the New Babylon crew, basically force to be part of their crew; heading to Manhattan while Negan is still stuck with the Dama and the Croat.

Source The episode starts with a really touching scene between Negan and a violin player named Victor and right away I got this feeling that something bad was gonna happen to this guy although I though it was going to happen right on the spot, it was just the way the scene was set up with Victor talking about Bach and how the music helped him through tough times, it felt like one of those moments where the show introduces someone just to make you care before killing them off, what a btch. It's just exactly what happened later. Then we see Maggie trying to convince the New Babylon leaders, thats the bunch of idiots I was talking about; that the Croat knows they are coming and they need to be more careful on their strategy, things can't be straight forward as they think but of course Major Narvaez lady doesn't want to listen to anything Maggie says even though Maggie's the only one who actually knows what she is talking about. Pearly seems to trust Maggie but he doesn't have enough pull to change their plans and then in a really convenient moment Hershel shows up out of nowhere having followed them because he didn't want his mom going alone, right away I knew this was bs or probably was a stupid plot idea as Naravez is, which leads to Maggie and Hershel getting locked up after Maggie punches Narvaez for threatening her kid. On the Negan side we get this awesome story about his time with the Saviors when he fed walker meat to a group that attacked them, which shows how the Croat still idolizes the old Negan and wants him to return to his savage ways.
Source Source The real highlight of the episode was definitely the ferry attack sequence where the Croat had set up a very primitive but at the same time advance defense system with mines in the water and these crazy walker bombs that they launched at the boat, it was like something out of a twisted medieval battle with the walkers being used as ammunition as they would fill them up with methane weird because how gas didn't escape? walkers are rotten and full of holes, the whole thing was cool enough only if you didn't overthink it since the science part doesn't make much sense. During this attack we see Negan actually enjoying the destruction until he notice Hershel on one the escape boat and hold out to launch the final attack which the Croat notices and reports back to the Dama, this makes me think again whats the grip she has over all this guys??.
The Croat snitching on Negan leads to the most intense scene of the episode where the Dama forces Victor to play his violin before brutally killing him with a pen to the neck right in front of Negan, making it clear that his hesitation had consequences, it was a really powerful moment that showed just how cruel and unpredictable Dama is as a villain, its here where she starts to bring out how of a savage she can truly be. This entire scene reinforced Negan's complicated position as someone being forced to do terrible things while trying to hold onto his humanity but at the same time he still can't denied enjoying part of it. After the attack the survivors of the ferry including Maggie, Hershel, and a few others end up taking refuge in what appears to be Central Park which we know from the previous episode is a dangerous no mans land with all kind of dangers going on from walkers to other humans.
Source Source This episode really stepped up the game with character development, especially with Negan being forced back into his old ways while clearly hating it and Maggie having to deal with the consequences of bringing her son into this dangerous situation, there's also this interesting subplot developing with Hershel possibly having some kind of connection to the Dama and I say some kind of just to not say something I'm not 110% sure but there is something going on with those two, as it seems like he might have been the one who set the tire fire as a signal.
The episode ends with the survivors hiding in Central Park, which sets up what will likely be a crazy and intense encounter in the next episode, people hiding within the tall grass, overall this was a really good hour that balanced action with emotional moments and continued to build the tension between all the different factions, I'm definitely excited to see where things go from here, especially with Negan now having even more reason to want revenge against Dama and the Croat after what they did to Victor.
I still think the second season is still stretching its legs delivering the kind of tense, character driven horror that made the original series so fkn good, the new villains are getting more development with Dama proving to be genuinely terrifying and the Croat showing his fanatical devotion to both her and the idea of who Negan used to be, the action sequences are creative and the stakes are high for New Babylon with characters we care about in real danger, I'm particularly interested in seeing how Negan will eventually break free from the Dama's control and reunite with Maggie because we know that has to happen at some point and when it does they are going to make a real power couple against these Manhattan villains, the show is also doing a good job of building mystery around Central Park and whatever monster is lurking there, which adds another layer of danger to an already precarious situation, with six more episodes to go there's plenty of time for the story to develop without feeling rushed and I'm hopeful that we'll get a satisfying conclusion that either wraps things up nicely or sets up an even more exciting third season, Dead City is not the strongest Walking Dead spinoff I would say is Daryl Dixon but it is still entertaining though, despite the low ratings its getting online.
