The young gunslinger Roland Deschain has left his home in Gilead at his father's behest, to avoid the devilish reach of the sorcerer called Marten Broadcloak. Roland has travelled to the barony of Hambry with his ka-tet of friends, Alain and Cuthbert, assuming false identities on the way.
As the trio travels, Roland meets - and falls in love with - Susan Delgado, whose father was killed by Hambry's new deputies - the Big Coffin Hunters, led by the white-haired Eldred Jonas.
Susan has been promised to the mayor of Hambry as his concubine - a fate that is unbearable to her (and to Roland). Unbeknownst to everyone, Susan has been hypnotized by the witch, Rhea. When Susan loses her virginity, she will do something...something known only to Rhea...
Roland and his ka-tet learn that Hambry is under the control of the evil John Farson, enemy of the Affiliation commanded by Roland's father. Farson's lieutenant, George Latigo, oversees a refinery that is producing oil to power evil machines that will be used to destroy the Affiliation.
To prevent this catastrophe, Roland and his ka-tet have hatched a plan...but first Roland seeks out Susan once more. Meanwhile, Mayor Thorin has forced himself on his soon-to-be wife. In tears, Susan flees to the nearby hills...
