The young gunslinger Roland Deschain and his ka-tet of friends, Alain and Cuthbert, have assumed false identities and infiltrated the barony of Hambry, which is under the control of the evil John Farson - the so called "Good Man" and enemy of the Affiliation commanded by Roland's father.
Farson's lieutenant, George Latigo, oversees a refinery that is producing oil to power machines that will be used to destroy the Affiliation. While Roland investigates, Eldred Jonas - leader of the band of assassins-turned-lawmen called the Big Coffin Hunters - learns that Roland (who he knows as Will Dearborn) is not what he seems...
To send a message to the young strangers, Jonas slaughters the pigeons the ka-tet had used to correspond with their fathers. But when Jonas finds the bird-skull good-luck charm belonging to Roland's ka-tet companion, Cuthbert, a more deadly plan begins to be hatched.
Meanwhile, Cuthbert has left his friends to deal with their dead pigeons. Cuthbert bagan questioning Roland's resolve - which may have been affected by his romantic involvement with the young woman from Hambry, Susan Delgado...
