Restitution

Restitution can be defined as the evidence of genuine repentance and spiritual maturity. Most of the sins we commit are not just against God but are also against our neighbors. When you repent of your sins, God forgives you but requires that you make amends with any person you have wronged.

Restitution makes you to repair or give an equivalent for loss, damage or injury you caused. It means to restore money, property or rights misappropriated; properties stolen or took away by force or any other means and pay back debts or unpaid bills. It also makes you uncover your crimes, confess lies, reconcile quarrels, apologize for slander, unjust criticism, cheating, false testimony and betrayal of trust, as well as seek forgiveness from those you have hurt.

Restitution is a cardinal doctrine of the Bible and an aged long practice that predated the law to the time of the patriarchs. Abimelech restored Sarah to Abraham. Joseph’s brothers who had ill treated and sold him into slavery apologized for their actions and sought his forgiveness.

Moses gave certain laws of restitution in the Pentateuch. The practice was also upheld and enforced from the time of the kings and prophets; to the church age; and right from the times of Jesus Christ and the Apostles until now.

God demands restitution so as to enable you have a clear conscience before Him and men and to follow peace with everybody. Repentance is between you and God. But restitution is between you and the person you have hurt.

There are many benefits in making restitution. First, you receive favour from God. Second, your prayers are speedily answered. Third, you are free from guilt, shame and condemnation. You also receive divine healing and protection.

However, if your restitution will implicate or harm others, you need to consult an experienced elder or a matured Christian leader for guidance. Whatever restitution you want to make, pray to God for help and just go ahead to make it. The Holy Spirit will help you. Happy new week.
