In Genesis 6: 4, it is said that, there were giants in the earth in those days and even after that, when the sons of God ascended to come into the daughters of the men, and bear them children, the same were mighty men which were of old, men of eminence.
This verse has attracted numerous questions and when I was reading it I also understood that one has to be humble and read the bible conscientiously to understand it.
The Hebrew word used to translate giants is Nephilim. This is a term that can be interpreted as people who are strong or powerful and not necessarily huge human beings. They are referred to in the bible as mighty men and men of renown meaning that they were famous men through power, violence or influence.
They are not explicitly stated as monsters that were superhuman. This would enable me to view that the verse is more about their character and deeds rather than their physical stature.
There is the idea that the sons of God were the angels and the second one is that they were godly men belonging to the line of Seth who intermarried with ungodly women. Comparing Scripture with Scripture, I can see that Jesus said that angels do not marry (Matthew 22:30).
This draws me to the argument that these were human beings who had rejected God. Their marriage resulted in bloody and corrupt nations and that is why God sent them to hell in the form of flood.
In later books, Numbers 13:33, the report about giants was also spoken of by the Israelites but it was an exaggeration by fear. This is what I have learned that not all references to giants are to be understood literally out of context.
Finally, Gen 6:4 calls us back to the extent of degradation that mankind experienced before the flood. The giants are the symbolization of mighty, yet unholy individuals whose lives were not gratifying to God.
As I consider this, I get to know that being strong, famous, or influential is nothing and nothing when a man goes out of the will of God. Obedience, humility and righteousness before Him is what matters.
God bless his word
Amen
