Have I ever done any crazy thing while growing up? Oh yes, I did a lot of crazy things. Some I'd laugh out loud whenever I remember them, others I cover my eyes in shame, wondering what I was thinking.
I could remember when I finished my secondary school education. A friend of mine suggested we go to the beach to have an “end of school” celebration. It sounded like a good idea and we all decided to go to the beach. I suggested we go to Ibeshe Beach, which is a lot farther from us plus we would have to get there by boat since it's closer to the waterside.
We were three in number who left for the beach. We prepared our own food and drinks so as to cut costs. We packed everything we needed into a big bag and off we went. The journey was fun. We were all looking forward to having a great time.
When we got to the waterside, we boarded a boat that took us closer to the beach. Since we didn't want to take the main gate, the driver assured us that there was another route he would take us through that way we wouldn't have to pay the gate fee and we would still gain access to the beach.
That seemed like a good idea at the time to save a little money. We decided to pay the boat fare without bargaining. We were given life jackets. That was my first time wearing one and off we went.
To say the journey was exhilarating would be an understatement. The rush of the wind of our faces as the boat sped up wasn't something to forget in a hurry. We continued our journey in what seemed to be forever before the boat stopped somewhere close to a riverbank and the driver told us to alight there, while showing us a route to take.
We thanked him and started walking towards where he showed us. We passed through some mud huts and in no time, we could hear the beach waves, signalling we were very close.
We took one last corner, lo and behold, we were at the beach. We saw lots of people there, families, friends and many more. We quickly dropped our bags on the sand, rolled up our trousers and went into the water. We played a bit in the water, while making sure our clothes weren't soaked with beach water.
After we played for a while, we ate our food and also drank to our fill. Then we danced to the music's playing at the beach, which garnered some attention as we took turns showing some dance steps.
After a while, I noticed some men pointing at us. I was seated upright while my two friends were lying flat on the sand. I watched from the corner of my eyes as the men started walking towards our direction.
They came close to us and one of them asked me for our gate pass. By then, my friends had gotten up. I quickly spoke up before my friends would say something else. I lied to the men that we had paid our gate pass to a man we saw at the gate and when they asked for the ticket we were given, I told them we had discarded it since we didn't think we might need it.
Since it was our first time, they believed me easily and gave us a warning to always have our ticket with us at all times. We thanked them and walked away. My friends couldn't believe their eyes as they didn't know I was capable of pulling a fast one to avoid us being discovered.
The rest of the day went by and we enjoyed it fully until we were about to leave for home. Obviously we couldn't go back the way we came for fear of discovery, so we had to go through the main gate as that was the only way we were sure to get a boat to take us back home.
Now the only problem was how to locate the main gate as there were few people left at the beach and asking someone would seem suspicious. So we had to look for an alternative.
Then I saw a guy at the beach. He was just standing alone with his hand in his pocket staring at the water. I noticed he was about to leave as well, so I quickly signalled to my friends and told them to play along. I went to the guy to say hi, batting my eyelids and looking at him coyly. He was surprised to see a lady come up to him but he quickly hid it.
My plan was to engage him in a conversation, so we could all walk back to the gate as I found out he came through the main gate. So we all walked down, my plan worked again and we saw a boat at the main gate. The guy, thinking I was interested in him, asked for my number so we could talk later on and I gave him a fake number as I only used him to get to the main gate.
I was also surprised at myself that day, I didn't know I could pull off those stunts but you never know till you try…..right?
