Hi guys,
Welcome to my blog for todays topic from the hive learners community. We are more than half way through Ramadan and I hope we have been coping real nice.
I grew up in two places and I can tell you straight up the differences in culture and how these two cultures has its own positives and negatives. Growing up, my dad was transferred to the Volta region, to a village which didn’t feel like a village. I say a village which didn’t feel like a village cause it didn’t really feel like a village. We lived in the apartment provided by a training college and you could straight up see the difference.
The thing is, before we left the north, we were also in an apartment provided by a training college and things were very different.
One thing that we have always and will always struggle with in this part of the world is open deification. I for one don’t think that open deification is a problem but the manner at which it’s done in this part of the world is the problem. I say in the manner at which is done is the problem cause it really is. Imagine as early as 5-6am you’ll find kids just outside your house freeing themselves. One thing I always ask them is why don’t you do it in front of your house but you have to carry yourselves and come to the front of my house to it? If open deification is such a good thing why don’t you do it outside your house then?
The funny part of this whole situation is that the same space that they require to do it is the same space that’s outside my house. I don’t usually blame the kids who do it but their moms. I blame their moms cause their moms will ask them to come as far as outside my compound to do that.
What happened to using the bushes? Using the bushes is will rather help fertilise the area but no, mu people will rather do it outside someone’s house.
I compare this situation to the Volta region’s situation and say it’s so different. Back then, even if you wanted to free yourself outside you’ll use the bush. You wouldn’t find people openly freeing themselves just outside someone’s compound.
The most annoying part about open deification is not only the smell but the sight of it. As you walk along the road you not only see it but you’re hit with a strong stench which is usually very annoying. I used to complain of the stench outside my house until I perceived one smell outside a primary school yesterday. The smell hits you so bad that it loves you thinking.
Now, around that school are peoples houses and it leaves me wondering how this people deal with this as well. Cause whenever I take a stroll along the school stretch I literally can’t breath and get still people won’t stop polluting the area. It’s really sad that we have grown this much and then we still have to deal with the problem of open deification.
Personally I think we will never see the end of this problem. We might end up developing over the coming years but if we don’t have a shift in mentality then we will have a very big problem. Also houses in these areas need to be sensitised about the importance of building a washroom when you put up a building.
The true problem is in this part of the world we just build and don’t consider building a washroom in the house; even if they end up adding it they only allow it to be used by the adults in the home. So essentially this children are trained to openly defecation. I really hope we can deal with it.
