🦉 The common reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus)

  • Emberiza embritz (Old German) bunting
  • schoeniclus skhoinos (Greek) reed; reeds; -cola (lat.) inhabitant; skhoiniklos (Greek) a small coastal bird mentioned by Aristotle

It is not difficult to guess that this bird inhabits various swampy and near-water biotopes, shrub-herbaceous and reed. However, during migration they are found in open spaces, where I actually met a small flock of these birds.

Another interesting characteristic of these birds is that they split reed stems to extract larvae. Their diet also includes small seeds.
