Lingering Echoes
The river flows in electric ripples,
stippled loamy sighing refrains.
Echoing gentle whispers in my dreams,
of how solidly you remain.
Death parts the seas,
a chasm between yester year,
while time plays on endlessly
in the mellow melt of piano keys.
Filigrees of water shine like silken hair,
muffling layers of joy
with grief and despair.
Flayed experience,
like wool floss twitching
on barbed wire, lost potential,
an illusion of life in the wind’s cry.
In those mellow whispers, subconscious
blisters, itching in trauma's loss.
In my dreams I see my friend from afar,
a distant impression, a session in VR.

This poem was written inspired by a night of pretty intense lucid dreaming. As the night passed I slowly lost awareness within my dream-scape, slipping into increasingly symbolic dreams which played on aspirations and insecurities.
It can be this way sometimes when exploring the subconscious in nightly wanderings. Just before waking, I slipped into a recurring dream in which elements of nature merge with the spirit of a dear departed friend who visits regularly.
This recurring dream is a bitter/sweet experience as it causes eddies of emotions every time, a maelstrom of anguish plunging me back to years ago when I first lost my best friend. Regardless, I would much rather suffer the sadness the day after than not see my friend again this way.
I can't explain this dream or experience adequately in any other way than through poetry.
