Story Summary
Children Who Chase Lost Voices is a beautifully animated fantasy adventure directed by Makoto Shinkai. Asuna Watase is a quiet and intelligent schoolgirl who spends most of her time alone listening to mysterious music on the crystal radio her father left behind.
Her peaceful routine is disrupted when one day she meets a mysterious boy named Shun, who comes from the mythical world of Agartala, where the secret to bringing the dead back lies hidden. When tragedy strikes again, Asuna and her teacher, Morisaki-sensei, set off for Agartala, desperate to resurrect his dead wife.
As they journey deep into the forgotten lands of Agartala, they encounter spiritual trials, ancient guardians, and moral dilemmas that question the value of reuniting with loved ones. Asuna's journey becomes a journey of emotional growth where she must confront loss, the burden of memories, and the meaning of letting go.
This anime is not just an adventure, it is a kind of soul-searching that teaches us how to move forward in life even after losing a loved one. The visual art, soundtrack, and emotional story make it a memorable experience.
My Review
Children Who Chase Lost Voices is incredibly beautiful and invites you to engage all your senses. Grief, loneliness, and the desire to bring back the dead are explored quite early on in Children Who Chase Lost Voices. While it’s a simple quest at first, I felt like these complex emotions were explored so effectively through the eyes of the child protagonist.
Asuna is a real character. She’s silent, strong, and hides her grief. Her journey to Agartha goes beyond physical movement as she struggles with deep emotions. The visuals and music are quite captivating in themselves, creating a sense of a different world as the story progresses. While sometimes contemplative in content, I was impressed by the thoughtful and honestly inquisitive nature of the film.
Makoto Shinkai delivers another remarkable story. However, this time, it’s more like a mythological and fictional story, unlike his usual romanticism. Asuna is a very human character, a quiet, sensitive and a teenager with a lot to hide inside. Her journey to Agartha is not only physical, but also emotional.
The visuals and background music beautifully create this atmosphere. Although the story can seem slow at times, its depth makes it exceptional.
Shinkai brings something a little different here from his other works of love. It reminds us that not everything lost can be regained but we can regain ourselves. This is a must-see film for those who love deep thoughts and tragic beauty. I hope you enjoy it. Good luck 👍
Thanks everyone for reading. See you again with another review. :)
