Hello Hive friends. A few months ago, I left the office feeling a bit overwhelmed by my workload and ended up in one of the factory's side corridors, which leads to a disused office block. It was quiet, away from the deafening noise of the machines. And I wasn't alone: a few meters away, a little acquaintance was showing off its attributes. Photographing this lizard immediately transported me back to my university days. There, I spent many hours among professors, classmates, books, and specimens, fascinated by the Anolis genus.

Hace unos meses salí de la oficina un poco abrumado por la carga de trabajo y fui a parar a uno de los pasillos laterales de la fábrica, que lleva a un bloque de oficinas en desuso. Era tranquilo, alejado del ruido ensordecedor de las máquinas. Y no estaba solo: a unos metros, un pequeño conocido hacía gala de sus atributos. Fotografiar a esta lagartija me transportó de inmediato a mis días en la universidad. Allí pasé muchas horas entre profesores, compañeros de estudio, libros y especímenes, fascinado por el género Anolis.
Cuba boasts some 65 species of this genus, of which nearly 95% are endemic. They offer a window into fascinating natural processes such as speciation and evolutionary radiation. Our island serves as the primary driver of the diversity of these reptiles in the Caribbean; many of the species that later colonized other islands originated or diversified here. It is the center from which much of their biodiversity dispersed. Studying Cuban anoles is like reading the opening chapter of a great book on adaptation. The Anolis sagrei in the photos is one of the most representative. Although endemic to Cuba, it has managed to colonize other islands and even the mainland, becoming classified as an invasive species wherever it has established itself. Seeing it among concrete structures and rusted metal made me reflect. Its stubborn presence serves as a paradigm of how wildlife persists in the spaces we alter. Each of these little animals carries within it millions of years of evolutionary history in its way of moving, hunting, and communicating with its gular fold.
El Anolis sagrei de las fotos es una de las más representativas. Aunque es endémico de Cuba, ha sido capaz de colonizar otras islas y hasta el continente, catalogándose como especie invasora donde se ha establecido. Verla entre estructuras de concreto y metal oxidado me hizo reflexionar. Su presencia testaruda se reivindica paradigma de cómo la vida silvestre persiste en los espacios que alteramos.
