The new IGTV feature on Instagram just shows again that decentralised Social Media Platform are the future! And here is why...
I remember when Facebook first allowed HD Videos on their Platform around March 2016.
If you were one of the first people uploading HD videos there, you could very easily and fast get a huge following. Here is why:
Facebook wanted to compete with Youtube as a Video platform, so Facebook decided to give Videos the highest priority in their algorithm. This means:
On Facebook everyone follows around 1000 friends and another 1000 pages and groups etc. This means you don’t have the time to see all the content from all sites and people. What will be seen on your timeline on top (or at all) will be decided by an algorithm. So if the algorithm favours videos then you will see Videos more often than pictures or anything else.
This algorithm works officially for your best interest, but it could be controlled by a single company (or person).
Theoretically the algorithm could show provoking left wing videos to right wing people and the other way round… And that, maybe, only in one city. In that way politics can be manipulated by a centralised social media platform.
Then I remember live Videos. The Facebook algorithm gave live videos the highest priority. So content-creators quickly jumped on the train and produced live Videos.
But wait a minute:
Are people watching so many live Videos on Facebook because they love live, to just because Facebook want them too. It’s because Facebook want them to. If Facebook tomorrow decides to give VR content the highest priority all people will run and buy VR glasses.
With decentralised social media platforms the actual users of the platform decides, what content will show up on their feed.
I believe that with decentralised social media we can experience a cultural revolution, because small artists and creators can be rewarded easily. This will encourage them to produce more and share more with the world.
Let’s not all follow just one star and make him a multi-millionaire, let’s all follow different small stars and help them to make a decent living from their art.
