I spent years passing through Porto's City Park without ever realizing all it truly offers. It's strange how something so close to us can be so obvious and, at the same time, so full of new things. Last weekend, we decided to go for a walk and headed for the park. We entered via Avenida da Boavista and, this time, chose not to limit ourselves to the most obvious paths. The idea was to discover new corners and enjoy the best the park has to offer.

Passei anos a passar pelo Parque da Cidade do Porto sem nunca me dar conta de tudo o que ele realmente oferece. É estranho como algo tão perto de nós consegue ser tão óbvio e, ao mesmo tempo, tão cheio de novidades. No fim de semana passado, decidimos ir passear e apontamos ao parque. Entrámos pela Avenida da Boavista e, desta vez, optamos por não nos limitar aos trilhos mais óbvios. A ideia era descobrir cantinhos novos e aproveitar o que o parque tem de melhor.
As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by that mixture of sounds that defines almost any park. Children running and laughing, dogs pulling their leashes and owners trying to keep up, and, of course, people running or walking with that determination that makes you think that maybe I should start running too. The aroma of the damp ground, the trees, and the sea breeze makes us forget where we are.

Assim que chegamos, fomos recebidos por aquela mistura de sons que define quase qualquer parque. Crianças a correr e a rir, cães a puxar pelas trelas e donos a tentar acompanhar o ritmo, e, claro, pessoas a correr ou a caminhar com aquela determinação que nos faz pensar que talvez eu também devesse começar a correr. O aroma do chão húmido, das árvores e da brisa do mar faz com que nos esqueçamos do sitio onde estamos.
There are small lakes where the ducks don't seem to notice the humans walking around them. They swim, dive, fight, and inevitably, everyone from children to adults is watching. Our daughter spent a good five minutes trying to feed a duck that, frankly, seemed unimpressed by our effort. It turned its back and went on its way, probably expecting a tastier snack.

Há pequenos lagos onde os patos parecem nem perceber que andam humanos à sua volta. Nadam, mergulham, lutam e, inevitavelmente, ficam todos a olhar desde as crianças aos adultos. A nossa filha passou uns bons cinco minutos a tentar alimentar um pato que, francamente, parecia pouco impressionado com o nosso esforço. virou costas e foi a vidinha dele, pois devia estar à espera de um petisco mais saboroso.
We even found some quieter spots, ideal for those who simply want to sit, relax, and observe. Tall trees provide perfect shade for an impromptu picnic, and benches scattered along the path invite short breaks for rest. The paths are wide and well-marked, for families, runners, cyclists, and even those who decide to take their dog for a walk without worrying about traffic or crowds.

Encontrámos ainda alguns recantos mais silenciosos, ideais para quem quer simplesmente sentar-se, relaxar e observar. Árvores altas proporcionam sombras perfeitas para um piquenique improvisado, e os bancos espalhados pelo caminho convidam a pequenas pausas para descansar. Os caminhos são amplos e bem sinalizados, para famílias, corredores, ciclistas e até para aqueles que decidem levar o seu cão para dar umas voltas sem se preocupar com trânsito ou multidões.
As we approached the exit near the Cheese Castle, we felt a mixture of tiredness and hunger. Walking from one end of the park to the other with occasional stops to observe made us realize how often we ignore what's right in front of us, like the sea view and the tranquil distance from the city's hustle and bustle.

À medida que nos aproximávamos da saída perto do Castelo do Queijo, sentíamos uma mistura de cansaço e fome. Caminhar de ponta a ponta do parque com paragens ocasionais para observar fez-nos perceber quantas vezes ignoramos o que está mesmo ali à nossa frente como a vista para o mar e a distância tranquila do burburinho da cidade.
But no visit to the City Park at this time of year is complete without hot chestnuts. Nothing beats that unmistakable smell in the air, which makes us stop, buy a cartridge, and burn our fingertips when we peel them. We sat together on the bench, eating warm, delicious chestnuts; it became the perfect ending to a walk that brought us laughter and simple moments of pure happiness.

Mas nenhuma visita ao Parque da Cidade, nesta altura do ano está completa sem as castanhas quentes. Nada supera aquele cheiro inconfundível no ar, que nos faz parar, comprar um cartucho e queimar as pontas dos dedos quando as descascamos. Sentamo-nos juntos no banco, a comer castanhas quentinhas e boas, transformou-se no final perfeito para um passeio que os trouxe risadas e momentos simples de pura felicidade.
For a long time, I looked at this park only as a walking space. But it's so much more than that. It's a space that reinvents itself with each visit and that, even after years, still manages to surprise. And, between stubborn ducks, smiling children, and warm chestnuts, we left already planning to return and enjoy these new places we discovered.

Olhei para este parque durante muito tempo apenas como um espaço de caminhadas. Mas ele é muito mais do que isso. É um espaço que se reinventa a cada visita e que, mesmo depois de anos, ainda consegue surpreender. E, entre patos teimosos, crianças risonhas e castanhas quentinhas viemos embora já com planos para voltar e aproveitar estes lugares novos que descobrimos.
